4-way switch in staircase

Daniel W

Question

Hi,

I have a hallway with a staircase where the light that is controlled from 3 wall switches (one downstairs and two upstairs). The wiring looks like the attached image. It consits of two 3-way switches and one 4-way switch in the middle.

Can I install Fibaro switch relays (or dimmer) to controll this and how many (1, 2 or 3)?

If it would be difficult I could compromise by bypass (disconnect) the 4-way switch in the middle (it's close enough to one of the 3-way switches anyway).

Hi ,

I made this diagram for my clients so they know how to wire the stairway switches.

In your hallway is a 3th switch, we call it "kruisschakelaar" cross switch?

Maybe you can figure it out with my diagram. You miss the 3th switch but maybe it helps you.

For other users sorry about the Dutch words, if you need help just ask.

best regards,

Emiel

  • Thank you very much Emiel for that drawing. It will certainly help me figure out the next steps.

I have just figured out that I have to low voltage in this light chain (only ~190 instead of 220/240) so I need to call in an electrician first to troubleshoot that issue.

This is how I did mine in a similar circuit. Also need to set for Bistable switch in params.

    Hope it helps.

  • Thank you,

I did nail it in the end actually but didn't update this thread during the Christmas holidays.

Here are my drawings I made before and after. I used a Fibaro dimmer so the connections are slightly different then robmac's picture.

Note: All my wiring's passed each other behind the 4-way switch, that's the rectangular box on the drawing in the middle.

That is interesting. I have not played with the dimmers and may give one a go. Can you adjust the dimmer from the switches or do you set the level in HC2?

  • Hi, no I still use the regular switches as they aren't really in use as I control the light by a motion sensor. With the dimmer it makes a nicer look when the light is fading on and off. As well the intention later would be to use an lux meter to adjust how strong the light need to be (the iMotion sensors I'm using aren't fully supported by HC2 so I can't get the correct lux reading yet...).
