Dimmer2 as remote switch without Load

MRHEARN

Question

Hi,

Does anyone know if a dimmer2 can be used solely as a remote switch - using S2 only.

i.e. without anything connected to S1 or Load

I'm trying to control another Dimmer2 unit - one at the top of the stairs - with the light, the other at the bottom - where I just have 3-way power - but no light.

Should this work?

Do I need a Load on the Dimmer2 unit for the S2 to send events?

Any suggestions?

[i have a working Dimmer2 S2 -> Relay, but this dimmer has a light connected to S1 + L, so similar but not exactly the same!]

Yes this works fine.

But you need to install a load for the first calibration, the dimmer deactivates wireless until first calibration is done.

After that you can remove the load and you will bi fine.

After that you should probably deactivate the autocalibration in HC2.

  • Thanks.  So I've connected a lamp and the module is working (with the lamp).  Can you help some more - it's not sending anything on the association with the remote dimmer2.

Should I have association group 4, or 5 - i.e. Basic or Multi level on the remote unit, and should this be sending this <light dimmer2>.0  or <light dimmer2>.1

I'm using a toggle switch on both units - if that makes a difference to the required configuration.

  • It would appear that the unit needs a load to continue working wirelessly.  i.e. once the load is removed - the dimmer2 ceases to send updates on status, although it still flags as active.

dimmer 2 doesn't support working without a load...

It doesn't, indeed, but you can use a "Bypass 2" as a load in three wire setup. See my post in that topic.

I have about 10 dimmer v2 installed without a load. This are working fine for something over a month.

I use a temporary lamp to initialise the dimmer calibration after this is done the LED on the dimmer wil get green and it works fine.

I then set Parameter 35 to "No auto-calibration of the load after power on".

    It works fine for me.

I am sorry if you got the impression I that I did not agree with you. It was not my intention. However, if you accidentally calibrate the dimmer, I think it stops working, doesn't it? Without the bypass, you would then have to open the box, or ceiling, and attach a load... Am I correct?

Edit: like you've said, setting parameter (35 to 0) is important to avoid a recalibration at the next power cut. However, the supported way is using the bypass.

    Same issue here.

Without a load the dimmer doesn't get past the calibration (fixed red light). I tried setting param #35 to 0 but still the unit would go into calibration mode.
Now it seems I'm stuck having to buy 12 FGB-002 seemingly useless bypasses ... which aren't available until next year.

Did you follow the instructions posted by PreHack, a few posts back? I did and it worked for me... You can decide later if you want the bypass or not...

Yes, tried those exact steps last night (before heading to this thread). I'll be testing again when I get home to be 100% sure.

Hopefully I'll be able to make do without the bypasses since a) They cost money, b) my wall sockets are cramped enough as they are and c) In theory it's a software issue. It should be perfectly possible to skip the load calibration.

    Unfortunately no luck yet.

    Here's my test setup.

2x FGD-212, One called master. One called slave. 3-wire setups. Goal is to have lights attached to the master dimmer and the slave to mimic the master actions without it having a load attached.

    Steps followed:

    1) Attach lights and momentary switches (to S1) to both dimmers

    2) Include them in network and test. All fine

    3) Add both dimmers to Association group 3 of the slave dimmer. (Slave dimmer now controls lights on master)

    4) Set parameter #35 of slave dimmer to "0 - no auto-calibration of the load after power on"

    5) Cut and restore power

    6) Slave dimmer shows constant red light meaning calibration procedure failed. Slave dimmer now no longer controls lights on master.

    What am I missing here?

I apologize... You are right. I thought setting parameter 35, like PreHack said, would protect against power cut. It does not. Why I thought it DID work? I don't now... Really! I must have done something wrong while testing. Sorry I've waisted your time. I don't know why it works for PreHack.

But I've rechecked what I've said earlier: it works with Bypass 2. Of course, it would be much nicer if Fibaro could add a parameter in a newer firmware, that would allow the dimmer to function as a kind of remote control. That sounds easy todo, but I've done some embedded development myself, for fun, using PIC processors... And I can assure that it's easier said than done. You don't want your new feature to break anything...

No apologies necessary. I greatly appreciate your efforts. Tnx!

I agree with your reasoning and we're even in the same boat in regards to the embedded development. For some reason it just feels wrong that I need to purchase a bypass to simulate a load just to pass a software check.

Guess I'll have to improvise since I'm wiring the new house with 30+ dimmers and now have no option to utilize the 2nd and 3rd switches to the same lightsource. "Sorry dear, you'll have to walk to the other side of he living room in the dark to go switch on the light"

So how do you get this to work with the another dimmer?

I have Dimmer1 connected to my loads....and it runs as it should. Then I have placed dimmer2 with a bypass2 and i can get that one to react to dimmer1. But how do I program it correctly to follow each other?

I have done it with lua.....and the only thing I can get is that if dimmer2 is pressed dimmer1 is turned on. The problem is that if I first turn on the light with dimmer1 I have to press the dimmer2 twice to get the correct stand.

I have alos tried the ordinary.....

Please login or register to see this code.

but this one doesn't seem to work. It is first when I really press the scen button run it reacts. How do you do?
