Change Scale of Dimmer (Vera)

Bobone

Question

Hi! I am a newbie and sorry for asking questions that may be answered elsewhere.

I want to control the temperature level of an old boiler by changing the Resistance of an input to it.

Ideally, I could use a Fibaro dimmer(?) to do this by controling a pontentiometer (not sure if this will work).

Two questions:

- how can I  change the scale from "%" to "degrees Celsius"  as viewed in my Vera Plus controller. Reprogramming of Fibaro or Vera? Luup programming?

- what is the output of the dimmer? Less Tension or Current(?) in Rx dimming mode?

Any ideas? Any other component that you would suggest. Can the Fibaro Relay be made into a dimmer?

Thanks,

Bengt

I'm not sure what you want to achieve. What kind of input do you have on the boiler? 0-10V ?

Or is just simple heater coil with on/off function, where you want to "dim" current  and in that way make heat temperature lower?

Dimmer does not changing voltage or current. It's "cutting" a piece of sinusoidal wave of from the alternating current (AC). It can be trailing edge or leading edge of the wave, depends which type of load you have (resistive, capacitive etc,) .Type in google "how dimmer works" and you'll find out.

Keep in mind that max load for dimmer is 200VA or 250W

But if you have just simple heating coil with, the best option will be relay switch to power the coil on and off, and temperature sensor inside the boiler, and some programming in the controller.

  • Hi, thank you very much for responding to my newbie post!!!

(actually I did edit the worst questions, but an old copy was kept on the board)

Anyway, here is what I want to do:

    - simulate an old temperature sensor to the boiler which is resistance based (NTC)

    - wirelessly be able to change the resistance

    Two problems:

    - change the scale from "%" to "°C". (Also, the NTC is non linear). The question is if this is best done in the Dimmer or the Vera controller?

    - need to convert a PWM from the Dimmer to a variable resistance (various mosfet ideas exist, nothing clear)

    Thanks!

    Bob
