AFAIK you cannot do this directly using a http link; you'd need a json post command.

What you could try though is making a virtual device with buttons which set the var and address those; ie:

Yes this is possible via the API. Check http://your_ip/docs/globalVariables. Just PUT the value. POST is not supported for global variables.

 

I use it to feed weather forecast data to my HCL.

For what it's worth here is some Python code to modify a global variable. The name of the variable is High_temp_today. The updated value is fc_high_today.
