Routing Table

ggoetz56

Question

Hi,

is there a possibility to read the routing table. What I know is that I.e. HC2 tries 3 routes to send a command to a remote node through the mesh net, then stops communication with the desired node. The maximum count of possible hops are 5 (4 routing devices).

This is what I found in the advanced User Guide:

The user can access the routing table. There are several software solutions, typically called installer tools, which visualise the routing table to optimize the network setup.

But I don't find any Scripts, installer tools, LUA-Code, etc. concerning about that topic.

Any hints to start for me?

Thanks

Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,

I am curious if some one can answer your question. It has been bothering me since I moved from a Popp hub to the expensive HC2.

At the Popp controller wich is based on the open Razberry Pi technology you can see all neighbors for every device from the expert menu (screen attached).

So I was disappointed that there is actually no way of troubleshooting routing on a HC2.

Hi @JeroenVisser & @ggoetz56,

No routing table as such, but frankly, I move things around that much that I wouldn't really know which was which ..

Do you have a Fibaro montion sensor ? It has a brilliant albeit often overlooked function of also being a range tester ;

Range test

FIBARO Motion Sensor has a built-in Z-Wave network main controller’s range tester.

To make Z-Wave range test possible, the device must be added to the Z-Wave controller. Testing may stress the network, so it is recommended to perform the test only in special cases.

Follow the below instructions to test the main controller’s range:

  1. Press and hold the B-button until the visual indicator glows violet.
  2. Release the B-button.
  3. Press the B-button again, briefly.
  4. Visual indicator will indicate the Z-Wave network’s range (range signalling modes described below).
  5. To exit Z-Wave range test, press the B-button briefly.

Z-Wave range tester signalling modes:

Visual indicator pulsing green – the Motion Sensor attempts to establish a direct communication with the main controller. If a direct communication attempt fails, the device will try to establish a routed communication, through other modules, which will be signalled by visual indicator pulsing yellow.
Visual indicator glowing green – the Motion Sensor communicates with the main controller directly.
Visual indicator pulsing yellow – the Motion Sensor tries to establish a routed communication with the main controller through other modules (repeaters).
Visual indicator glowing yellow – the Motion Sensor communicates with the main controller through the other modules. After 2 seconds the device will retry to establish a direct communication with the main controller, which will be signalled with visual indicator pulsing green.
Visual indicator pulsing violet – the Motion Sensor does communicate at the maximum distance of the Z-Wave network. If connection proves successful it will be confirmed with a yellow glow. It is not recommended to use the device at the range limit.
Visual indicator glowing red – the Motion Sensor is not able to connect to the main controller directly or through another Z-Wave network device (repeater).

It's great nbecause you can walk around and physically check the signal at a location before installing anyting, or move slightly to improve or see how well the mesh is growing towards a particular location .. and it's portable.

Hope this helps,

 Cheers,

al.

  • Hi Jeroen and Alan,

Thanks for the posts. I think most of the time you will need the table if you have intermediate errors. If the device is out of range you will be recognize that soon. But if it works for hours, days and is suddenly marked dead for no obvious reason you will may have a look to the neighbors table.

There is a table and its layout is described . It is similar to Jeroens graphic just using 0 and 1 instead of green and red dots. The manual says it can be retrieved by "installer tools" . So I hope someone knows one of the mentioned tools.

I wrote the lines above yesterday but could not manage to store them due to system errors. I tried yet again. When I click the answer button they appear again. So never give up.

One more, thanks for your comments.

    Gerhard

Z-Wave plus devices use "explorer" frames to discover new or changed routing, so the mesh is self repairing. This reduces the importance of the visualisation of the routing table.

Also bear in mind, Z-Wave routing does not work like IP routing. It is source routed, meaning the packet records the route on its way to the destination. That is why the number of hops is limited, there is no room in the packet to record more hops....
