HCL Stuck in recovery mode

aziwa

Question

Hello everyone

I have had my HCL for several years and been very happy with it. Suddenly last week my HCL was not responding so I power cycled the unit.

Now I seem to be stuck in Recovery mode. The unit always boots into recovery mode no matter what options I select (Repair, Repair from File, Recover System or Exit recovery). I was on 4.200 with no luck, then I used Repair from File to downgrade to 4.150 (From:

) but still not able to exit recovery mode.

Of note: when the unit reboots, it can take an hour or more to enter recovery mode again.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thank you

  • unfortunately not. I ended up buying a new HCL as mine was out of warranty and I did not want to waist time with the repair process.

Wish Fibaro would address this as it seems other people are having the same issue.

Keep HCL turned on until its led lights be fixed. Maybe it takes two days. After that, wait for a week and leave it to be turned on. Before that, you can goto ip address and reset HCL.

    That was all my experience.

    Hello,

I had to do a factory reset on my HCL. I don't want to install the current version now, but a previous one. How can I do that?

I already have the version I want to install, how do I perform the installation?

    Thanks

You have to go to recovery mode, and recovery HCL by a firmware file.

This is common problem of NAND flash. After a while it stops working. The UBI system trying to move data from damaged phisical memory blocks but sometimes data lost forever. The only way to fix this - replace the NAND chip (which is not easy, because You need to backup and restore the foriginal lash content to do it)

Once start dying it will die for sure. So better to save the data and to move on other h/w. The HCL price is not worth sending it in far far away repair center to replace the chip IMO

Can you explain why this happen? Is this a firmware or updating issue?

This is hardware issue. Any flash chip has limit of erase cycles (reset to all bits to 1). When reached the block no longer can erase or write (change bits 1 to 0)

There are some tethniques how to keep data on flash: ECC for small (few bits per page) data recovery and remap (mark the page as BAD and never use it moving data to other one)

When both of those no longer can handle errors, system stopps working.

Replacing the Nand memory in Fibaro cost 30€ + 20€ for shipping back.

I did it and I was very happy for the service.

sometimes (when running fw up to 4.540 and not able to update to latest version) one can burn the custom recovery (boot partition only), to at least be able to update to 4.600.  But this is of course only temp "solution"
