Do’s and Don’ts of the Community

Recommended Posts

Below you’ll see a number of common, incorrect practices occurring when posting on this Forum and advices on how to avoid them.

We’re introducing this list in order to make sure that the forum stays tidy, clear, and easy to navigate.

We want to be certain that being a part of this community is as pleasant for all its users as possible, so please, remember that if you’re going to avoid “Do’s” and stick to “Don’ts” you might get a warning from one of the moderators. ;)

Don’t – Create a post regarding an issue that has already been brought up.

Do – Use the search tool before creating a post and make sure that you’re not duplicating anything from the past.

Don’t – Create a topic that doesn’t relate in any way to the main topic of the subforum.

Do – Make sure that what you’re about to post belongs to this subforum.

Don’t – Formulate your posts using stream of consciousness as your main writing technique. ;)

Do – Keep your posts as concise as possible as focus on the topic of the discussion.

Don’t – Insult other users and use “foul language” or symbols that may be considered offensive.

Do – Respect other users and their opinions. (Let’s keep this community polite :))

Don’t – SCREAM (write in all caps) at other users.

Do – Stick to the widely accepted manner of writing.

Don’t – Use a title for your posts that don’t specify the issue. “Problem”; “Please help”; “Motion sensor”;

Do – Make sure to name your posts in a way that already specifies the kind of issue you want to discuss. “Motion sensor adding problem”; “Can’t update my firmware”

Don’t – Quote an entire article or another user’s post. Especially if the quote comes from the latest post in the thread.

Do – Quote the exact sentence or short paragraph that you want to discuss or mention the user who posted the phrase.

Don’t – Spam by posting the same content in numerous threads and subforums

Do – Make sure to pick one subforum or thread to discuss your issue.

Don’t – Ignore it if someone is breaking the rules of the forum.

Do – If you see someone breaking the rules, make sure to report it to the moderators. Your help would be most appreciated! Remember to add a comment so that we know what you’re reporting.

Don’t – Abandon your thread after resolving your problem.

Do – Let everyone know that one of the proposed solutions worked in your case so that other users might benefit from it as well (mark it as best answer) and remember to thank the person that provided it.
