Single/double Relay switch triggering

Guest stevebratt

Question

Guest stevebratt

Hi all, I want to buy somethign like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Retro-Reflective-Photoelectric-Detector-Sensor/dp/B008EHJ0L6 It has hi or low contacts when triggered. I intend to cover the end of my drive with it after some unwelcome visitors walked onto the driveway and tried car door handles at 4AM

The idea is that when the beam is broken the Fibaro relay will see the state change and trigger.

Id Like to turn on a light / lights for say 10 mins. then turn them off again, I would also like the trigger to update the zwave controller (in my case smart things) and then smart things will perform some actions.

the only thing im worried about is that the beam, high low will only be a short while maybe less than a second as somone breaks the beam. how will the relay perform if it appears that a switch goes from off to on to off qucikly. also it might go off and on multiple times, or if someone breaks the beam permanently how do i handle that?

Do you think this will work? Looking through the manual I think I could set it up in the following way

S1 takes the feed from the Beam relay, Hi when triggered.

Q1 out to the lighting circuit and the rest setup as normal

Parameter 3 - Auto Off relay Manual override disabled set to 0

Parameter 4 - Auto off in seconds set to 600 (10 mins)

Parameter 14 - 0 (momentary Switch)

In theory... as this device doesn't have dimming if someone parks in the way of the beam and the relay is left open, if will be as if the momentary switch is held down, this should have no impact on how it functions and the relay will go off as normal. correct?

With the setting as above, can the zwave controller dictate when the light works, so only between sunset and sunrise? or will this always be overridden by the hardware setup as a switch.

Also if i turn the lights on with the zwave controller will they stay on indefinitely, or will the relay turn them off after 10 mins, the same as if the switch is pressed.

for instance, id like the lights to come on at sunset, and go off at 10, from 10 onwards id like the the light beam to control the lights and turn them off after 10 mins.

Hope all that make sense.

it states it has a volt free contact so that means you could actually use a Universal Binary Sensor connected to the volt free contacts and use that as your trigger for scenes. eg turning light on and then off after 10 mins.

the time the scene works can be setup using variables.

Im assuming that smartthings does have the ability to create user variables.

thanks

  • I do have a Universal Binary sensor going spare that i picked up for a project and never used, however, the main problem with it is powering it. As it is going to be a security device I want it to be as reliable as possible and hard wiring it would be better which I think is why one of the fibaro relays might do the job better. Smart things will allow variables and things. The only problem with smart things is for most operations it requires internet, most functions don't work offline. At this point with the amount of fibaro devices I have i should probably just get a fibaro gateway.

I suppose it would make more sense to have smart things control how long the light stays on for and when it works. I could attach the sensor to S2 and have smartthings trigger the s1 contact if its the right time of day etc. that would also mean I could possibly use S1 as a manual switch for the lights.
