Burned through FGS-223 EU

Question

What happened here? After +- 18 months in use i found this. It was handling a load of maybe 100w of lights.

Are these devices safe? I have fibaro modules built in in almost all walls...

Yes, this may be when the cable is not properly tightened.

The connection becomes overheated and it is a common cause of fires.

Picture doesn't seem to show charing or burning marks on the connections or screws , although the L terminal is gone ?

I recommend to always use cable ferrules on all cables connected to devices, to ensure proper connection and minimize the chances or short circuiting. Preferably 1.5mm. Ensure that you carefully bend the wires back behind the device before you insert it into the wall box.

Is the device behind an existing dimmer or termostat , what kind of lights are you dimming ? Non dimmable bulbs  will burn out some dimmers..

  • It is just 15 led lights without a dimmer or thermostat. Functioned perfect for 18 months.

inside the module there is nothing what can burn at that place of the PCB, so there are two possible reasons:

    - to much force used during installation, so the pin or solder point of that pin got loose or broken

    - L cable was loose

Only 100W of LED light might be "lot of" inrush current, together with these two errors above a disaster.

    Q: Are these devices safe?

Sure, when properly installed no problem at all.

I agree. Not to belittle home enthusiasts or annoy anyone on the forum , but connections and wiring of devices is sometimes better left to professionals. I  come across this type of problem often and always recommend that you have a qualified electrician check everything before you power up your devices/ system. Here in Norway your insurance will not cover fire damage if you have wired something yourself.  Considering the total cost of setting up a z wave network , paying an electrician for a few hours work is not such a bad idea. Personally i am impressed by the quality of fibaro products , screw terminals and load  capacity  and resulting heat emission.

Just a little food for thought !
