[rpi4] Good for teaming up with a HC3?

ppeterr

Question

I am exploring the posabilities to run external scripts that can  be used with my HC3.

For now, i am running a Virtualbox with ubuntu on my windows pc, so i can experiment.

Things are working out pretty well, so i am looking for a more permanent solution.

I think the RPI4 is a good candidate.

I'd like some advice. What are you running next to your HC3 ?

What OS, did you install, and what do you use it for.

Thanks!

What are your requirements?

FWIW I run all my external Python scripts as Docker containers. Most of them on a Raspberry Pi 2, and a few on my x86 NAS. Usually I do the development on a powerful platform and run the production on a more efficient platform like RPI. The hardware platform doesn't make much difference unless you need a lot of storage or compute. And the container enviroment solves most, if not all, platform compatibility issues.

Cheers,

jayrock

  • For now, i need  a LAMP server to do some simple php tasks locally.

Also i am interrested in piHole, and maybe in the future read out the P1 port  of my smart meter.

Well, thats all for now :)  But i get new ideas everyday.

You mention docker. I am planning also to get a Synology NAS.....

Maybe i can work out my plans on that....or both :)  I dont know yet.

I am completely new to all of this.

  • Alright :)

Will have this tommorow, ready to install ubuntu server LTS, for LAMP, Pihole, InfluxDB.

A good start i hope. This one will be for the main things.

Later on maybe a second one for the p1 monitor-ztatz.nl. I think that can run on a cheaper sollution, like a pi3 ? What i see, is that the p1 monitor software is a system-image that needs his own rpi? Cant be installed as a package ? Uhmm....need to read some stuff about that.

It should work on a Pi3. But if there is not much difference in price of the Pi3 and Pi4, I would choose for a (small) Pi4. The builder of ztatz.nl likes an own Pi, just to minimize the support. It can be installed as a package, but I would take the hazzle and just install the plug-and-play system image from ztatz.nl on a separate Pi. And the software from ztatz.nl is great!!

    and the quickapp also ?

And some “klitteband” is your friend

Have fun with LAMP, Pihole and InfluxDB ?

    And don’t forget Grafana ???

Let me google on that :)  I have 100000 things to do, so why not one more.

But first i need a p1 connection splitter. Since the port on the smart meter is taken by "toon" as it seems.

  • Yeah, it looks good. But then again i dont have that much data to collect around the house yet.

First setup the p1 monitor, or maybe stick to my first plan. And thats rooting "toon".

But, maybe take some smaller steps, and get my head around what is working already, optimize

and finish the quickapps i am trying to use. Well i must admit, anything more then the standard stuff

on the HC3 is pretty advanced for me :)  I think this little machine is not for the "normal" user. (or maybe its just me)

no, it is not for the normal user, normal like someone who doesn’t want to learn other kind of things just for the fun of it. But this forum is full of good examples or ready made products, so you can spend (or waste) a lot of time with your Homecenter. ?
