Dimmer for LED behind Driver?

Wigster

Question

Hi, I have a couple of LED hanging lights that I would like to be able to dim. They are connected to the 230V mains and have drivers inside the lamp enclosure, which according to the writing on them are "CC mode" and put out 69 V.

What's the correct device to use as a dimmer? My original plan (before I realised they were LEDs) was to put in a Dimmer 2 behind the present toggle light switch, which I would convert to a momentary one. Is this the right way to go? Or do I need a different product. Do I need a bypass?

First you need to know if the led driver and the lamp is dimmable, if so then its no problem. There are lots of dimmable LED's these days, my house is full of them. And the way you connect it is same as with normal light, just wire it behind the toggle light and use a momentary switch. A bypass across the light source is always recommended (make sure its before the driver) , especially when you have only 2 lamps you need a bypass to avoid flickering etc.

  • Is there some standard way to say whether the LEDs are dimmable? I guess I might as well just try it.

Yes just try it. The dimmer2 auto calibration process will select the best dimming method. (Leading or trailing).
