One drimmer for 24 lights

Krystiann

Question

Hi,

I need to connect 24 lights (12 lights in a single area) in my salon.

Do you think a single Drimmer can handle that?

LED?  yes

24 LED? It depends on the inrush current, a value that is rarely given by the manufacturers. If it is too high, Fibaro Dimmer 2 will report "SURGE" and turn off.

Fibaro Dimmer might do the job but remember, it is TRIAC based and less suited for LED bulbs and it will happily drive itself to death while "Dimmer 2" will protect itself.

Dimmer 2 has several protections. One of them refuses to turn on a load that causes a spike at the start aka inrush. LED lamps are capacitive loads, they need high current when they start (higher current than incandescent). How much? Depends on the brand and type of internal circuitry. As a rule of thumb: if you use more lamps in parallel, you get a higher surge. The "SURGE" report may seem random. Why is the problem random? Because the power supply is "Alternating Current". Your supply goes from 0 to plus minus 320 volt, one hundred times per second (it's a sinoid, but that's not important). If you happen to switch on at peak voltage, the dimmer might see the load as a short circuit and shut down + send an alert.
