Fing Fingbox Presence Detection & Security

PepsiMac

Question

Does anyone know how to connect Fibaro to extract presence information from a free app called Fing?

Fing is able to identify which claims to have the ability to recognise phones within wifi range, even when they are asleep and can provide details of all the devices in range if you have a hardware item called a FingBox. I got one and have installed it because it can pic up the MAC address of any device so, for security, you will be able to tell when an unknown phone has entered your space, very useful to track a thief.

They have a development toolkit

and Karl Wachs has developed plugins with their api (as well as an API that can gain data from Unifi devices)

Fing seems to offer the opportunity to finally achieve a reliable indication of presence though unfortunately, my programming skills are limited to non-existent.

Is anyone with ability interested in looking at this?

Thank you for your response but I think you will find this solution is rather outdated and based around the HCL.

In Jan 2018, Find produced a new API and in Nov 2018, tools to identify specific devices within range (PDFs attached).

The question is how to write a straightforward VD or scene to get this info directly as is done with the example included, not endlessly relying on 3rd party devices, all of which have to function.

A  VD or scene that could acquire confirmation of the proximity of a device, even if it is sleeping, would be a major step towards a presence calculation that would improve many functions of Fibaro's Home Automation offering.

  • Hi, anyone got any ideas how to use the Find?

Like Tony says, his idea is old, outdated and unlike the Fing, his solution cannot ping iPhones which, in order to save power, constantly disconnect.

Have you considered using Find friends app built into the iPhone? I use it for my wife and I and have it working 100% reliable.

  • Thanks for the advice, I shall have a look at it though I already own the FingBox.
