Fibaro Dimmer FGD211 requires multiple attempts to add

Recommended Posts

I have been encountering issues with adding a Fibaro Dimmer module FGD211. It has taken me two days and countless attempts to finally get HC2 to add the device.

I have read up all I can find about adding and removing devices, and yes, this device has been added previously (about a week ago).

In attempting to get the device to add I have:

- restored old backups

- reset the zwave network

- restarted hc2

- clicked on the service button 1, 3 and more than 3 times when the hc2 is in learning mode

Eventually after an nth restore of a previous backup I decided to add the device again and after a couple of clicks voila it appeared!

Is there anything I can do to diagnose connection issues?

Is there a definitive way to clear HC2's history of previously added devices?

This is the third device I have added. The aim is to put in at least 10 to 20 times the number of devices however I am disheartened with the whole process after this experience.

It's importand to remove a device from it's previous association before trying to re-add it.

Thanks for the prompt reply, but until 5 minutes ago I did not know what an association was let alone had I applied it in my HC2 setup, so it has nothing to do with the issue.

Well, you stated that the device was added before about a week ago. That's why I thought that it was removal of the device that could be the problem.

No worries Biggles. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Can anyone get back to me on my questions?

    - Is there anything I can do to diagnose connection issues?

    - Is there a definitive way to clear HC2's history of previously added devices?

    Thanks

    amilanov,

There are a few things we need to clarify before we get to the cause of your problem, can you answer the following?

Before trying to add the device did you try to remove it?

When the dimmer was previously connected was it in the exact location that it is now?

Have you moved your HC2 to a different location?

Have you at any stage used the Beta version of the software? (2.0xx)

If I was to hazard a guess based on the information from your posts above, I would expect that you enrolled this device and then disconnected it, moved it, or the HC2 to another location and tried to re-enroll it without it being removed first.

When you rolled back to a previous version you may have rolled back to one where this dimmer had never been enrolled. I am speculating but if this is the case there are very good reasons as to why you could not enroll the dimmer again and these reasons form part of the exceptional qualities that come with a Z-wave networks routing principals and protocols.

To answer your direct questions from the post above:

    - Is there anything I can do to diagnose connection issues?

    Not really

    - Is there a definitive way to clear HC2's history of previously added devices?

    Hi,

amilanov, asJohnnyC, said please be sure you will remove the device from system even if it is not added to the interface (DEVICES -> REMOVE DEVICE), and also you can try to extand the time of "Duration of Learning Mode" to 999seconds. Please wait about 5 seconds after message that "Home Center 2 is in learning mode" and then you can try to add device.

Thank you all for your feedback.

I now know that devices must be removed prior to re-adding them to be prudent always remove a device first if you think it may have been added previously, this is even if it does not appear in the control panel. I still question how well the “reset the z-wave network” button works given I tried this option already.

I have added comments to the post below however I also have some further questions based on the responses:

    1) In making sure that modules connect I setup a test rig near my HC2. That way I can be in the same room as the device to go through the adding process. Based on some of the comments below it seems like this is not advisable i.e. the device should be in its final resting place before you try and connect it. If this is the case then how do you work around any connection issues you may experience during setup i.e. I live in a house with quite a few stairs from the ground floor to the top floor, running up and down the stairs (although good exercise) is barely feasible

    2) Will there be any connection diagnostic tools implemented in future releases of HCS? Is this even on the roadmap?

    3) How do I get involved in the beta releases?

    Thanks again for everyone’s help.

    amilanov,

There are a few things we need to clarify before we get to the cause of your problem, can you answer the following?

Before trying to add the device did you try to remove it?

---- the short answer is no, I restored to an old backup in which I thought the device was not added although I can not be sure

---- it’s clear to me now to remove the device first, then re-add it later regardless

When the dimmer was previously connected was it in the exact location that it is now?

---- no idea, I have been moving the modules around as part of my testing process; is this a problem? i.e. should you not move a device to a new location before you remove it? The reason I ask this is because I was having issues with connecting the devices in the first instance so I started trying different modules to try and eliminate possible causes for the connections errors, for example, to test whether the module was actually faulty or not

Have you moved your HC2 to a different location?

    ---- no,

Have you at any stage used the Beta version of the software? (2.0xx)

    ---- no

If I was to hazard a guess based on the information from your posts above, I would expect that you enrolled this device and then disconnected it, moved it, or the HC2 to another location and tried to re-enroll it without it being removed first.

---- it is likely that I did move it to a new location and then tried to add it; this is why I wanted to know how you can reset the network, which you have answered below

---- I did reset the z-wave network after which I tried to re add the device; this did not work

If you have modules in the same room then Home Center 2 then your issues are not associated with range issues.

I am afraid that we do not plan it.

    3) How do I get involved in the beta releases?

You can not yet. It will be available within few weeks.
