z-wave.me have released (although not yet in production) a ZWave daughter board that can be attached to the GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi. The new daughter board uses the 3rd generation ZWave chip/module (3102 Z-Wave transceiver), with an SPI interface. This makes it easier for people who want to explore ZWave with embedded devices rather having to resort to a USB stick. However, as per the licensing restrictions of Sigma Designs, unless you sign an NDA/agreement, you'll get no access to the API speicfcations. In this particular case, ZWave.me have developed a JSON interface to the daughter board effectively mapping most functionality onto the Sigma API. Their Z-Way cloud based home automation service uses the same technique.

For others, the Open ZWave project have attempted to reverse engineer the API, making an open source library available. There are also a number of home automation packages available that use Open ZWave.
