Disable heating when not at home by variable

Guest MitchellOnline

Question

Guest MitchellOnline

I am using the heating panel to control the temperature in my home.

Only problem is that I have to use the 'Manual mode' to overrule the heating panel when I am leaving my home.

See:

So I created a scene and a variable (Uit huis = 1).

The scene checks if the variable is 1, if it is 1 it puts the boiler relay of.

On this I way, I can set my heating system completely off by a scene on my iphone.

See:

BUT: The heating panel turns the switch ON every minute, my scene turns the switch OFF every minute.

How can I solve this?

Hi - I had a similar challenge with a toggling heating device, controlled by in my case conflicting heating zones. See

Basically, there are conflicting rules which both want to control the heater: one wants it on, the other one wants it off. So, HC2 will toggle the status every minute.

In your case, I think you can work around your issue using a timer-relay as well, albeit in a reverse way. Instead of selecting 'off-delay' (as in my earlier post), you should use the 'on-delay' setting (meaning: switch on only after a delay of x seconds).

You may want to try the following (re-worked from my earlier post):

- Buy a timer-relay (roughly €30-€40) which has an 'on-delay' function

- Set the 'On-delay' between 70 & 80 seconds

- Use your boiler-relay to trigger the timer-relay, and then have the timer-relay close the heater/boiler contact (replacing the traditional thermostate).

What you then get is that even though the boiler relay will be going on/off/on/off every minute, each cycle it will reset the 70 second countdown of the timer-relay and the relay contact will remain open (not starting the heater yet). When you reach home and your variable says "I AM HOME", the scene will stop resetting the timer and the relay will time out after 70 seconds, and switch on the heater...

Sure - this can be arranged much more elegant in software if Fibaro would enhance the heating panel functionality. Whilst they haven't though, at least my house is warm when and where I want it!

I realize this may be a bit confusing, reading it just like this. Drop me a direct message and we can discuss it in Dutch in more detail if you want...

Groeten,

Ronald

    Groeten,

Hi Ronald, thank you very much for your detailed explanation!

The only thing that concerns me (like posted earlier) is the lifetime of the Fibaro relais. I have fixed my problem by adding another Fibaro relais and connected it serially.

    See my scheme:

Sorry if the scheme is not drawed like it should be, I am not a electrician. But it does make sense how my system works right now. I have connected some LED's, they ALL turn off if one of the Fibaro relais turns on. I haven't find a solution to turn on a single LED when one of the relais is activated.

I have also mounted a switch to switch to my old room-thermostat in case of emergency.
