Oh oh?!

are samsung and HTC going to support zigbee... We are stuck with a beautiful protocol z-wave.... I mean you can use converters. But the whole point of a standard is of not needing that!

Z-wave is a gorgious protocol. But it was and is the wait of what the big companies are going to use on what will be the leader in this world in a few years.

Any thoughts here from Fibaro or the forum members?! I like to get the discussion going here.

Z-wave and zigbee are relly different.

For me yes z-wave is better because you can go very far with the technology.

But zigbee avec only one module in the center of the house. So you can go everywhere without problem but with z-wave, your device is register with one node, so if you go too far from this node, is not going to work. You must update device to work again. So impossible to do that with a smartphone.

Hope you understand me because I am very tired

I am not sure zigbee is a mesh network.

Didn't know, I thought zigbee have gateway. Thanks for this information

    with a beautiful protocol z-wave

but the Z-Wave implementations have been poor... I am open minded on this and will swap if Z-Wave does not get better. New z-wave chip designs may have come too late.

    Zigbee uses 2.4Ghz

    Z Wave - 868 Mhz

Distance covered is 3 times more and signal penetration loses are less in Z Wave

Z wave has less chance of RF interference. Zigbee uses same band as Wifi

hence the fact its being incorporated into mobile handsets... keep your bloated 2.4ghz thank you i am more than happy being a loner on my own channel!

Well the reason I think I haven't seen any good zigbee gateways yet is because the Zigbee communication protocol itself is a standard, but the layer on top isn't.

Which is very important in the communication between the products of two different manufacturers. As they both use zigbee. they "could" communicate. but if one company uses a different implementation for how to switch a light on and off, you are still no where.

And I think that is the power of z-wave.

This power is also the disadvantage of z-wave. It only has a few manufacturers of the chipsets.

If you look at the cost to start developing for the z-wave platform you need at least 10.000 euro's for a basic kit and development tools (excluded the software

Which in comparison to zigbee. you buy a kit for 40 euro's....

So a choice for many companies is easy, just maybe not smart

    "Samsung HTC support Zigbee "

This feature can only be useful to control devices over the 'phone' 'locally'.

When we speak about 'Automation(more than just a control)', there requires a independent controller/Gateway(one can not leave the $900 Samsung/HTC phones

Making the Z-wave Gateways more cheaper would be the 'Smart' idea

    +1

and easier to get hold of!!! you can get zigbee devkits from farnell why not z-wave even the rasp-pi module is on hold.

restrict supply until you disappear z-wave boys

The RaZberry is in stock at Vesternet.

And I have yet to see Zigbee products from two manufacturers working together.

    Just catching up here..

For me, I've spent months reverse engineering ZWave protocol, because 1) it's not documented anywhere, and 2) you can't build your own devices (not unless you want to pay the $$$ and sign the NDA). That said, interoperability is very good (not perfect). Zigbee on the other hand is completely open, and all the specs are available, and you can build your own devices, but, interoperability is poor.

My ideal controller would support both (have a hybrid), and have the capability for enthuasiasts/3rd parties to extend the controller capability to support the customised devices.

    That's why I use Homeseer.

My system has Z-Wave, 433, Visonic, Arduino, PHP to my inverter, SMS via usb modem, X-10... And Tane properly has a much lager system.

I like the looks and user friendliness of HC2 (I have never tried one), but I cannot see myself only using Z-Wave and http.

I use a lot of Fibaro devices though.

I've been down the Homeseer route. Liked the idea of the extensibility (to write drivers, etc), however, the biggest let down for me was the user interface. Very 90's and klunky. I struggled, my wife gave up. The reason for the Fibaro was the cleaner user interface, however, it's lacking on the (device) extensibility front. Seems we need some hybrid, although I read on the forums that people run both.

I use HS Touch and cheap tablets to interface Homeseer. Homeseer is very time consuming, and I would like something else, but I can not find anything better.

My plan is to use Homeseer until Fibaro (or someone else) catch up.

The price tag on HC2 is too high for me to run both. (I have run a two master system before.)
