Fibaro smoke detector

Can anybody tell me what the behavior is when I have 3 Fibaro smoke detectors. Will they all sound the alarm in case of fire.

The one that detects the fire will sound the alarm but what will the others do.

Nope, they won't I'm afraid. If you want that, you'll need a separate siren that gets triggered in case one of the smoke detectors is set off.

    I think you are wrong.

It is legally required (in many countries including USA) to alarm all smoke sensors simultaneously, plus Fibaro sensor is compatible with old wired smoke sensors (i.e. recognizing 9V signal probably).

Then Fibaro gave me the wrong information..

Or they are willing to get some serious issues with a legal authorities

    For example, in the UK:

"An Approved Document, which takes effect on 1 July 2000, dealing with the following Requirement from Part B of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 1991.

FIRE ALARM AND FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS"

    "

Note: Smoke alarms may be interconnected using radio-links, provided that ."

    Grades of System

Essentially, Grade addresses the reliability of a system in terms of its power sources.

    Grades A-C Grade D Grade E Grade F

more complex systems outside the scope of this guide

interlinked mains smoke/heat alarms with back-up power

interlinked mains smoke/heat alarms, no back-up power

    interlinked battery powered smoke/heat alarms

Normally alarms should be interconnected, and can be radio-linked or interlinked by wiring. Grade D is now the norm for the majority of domestic situations. Grade F may only be considered for some existing, owner-occupied dwellings but not unless there is a ‘reasonable certainty’ that batteries will be replaced when necessary: sealed-in battery types can resolve this issue. Grade E is inappropriate where there are likely to be periodic interruptions to mains power (for example, for non- payment or with coin-operated meters).

    even visonic doesn't have that

the visonic has one way communication and when 1 goes off, the other ones do nothing.

(i know, i have 6 visonic smoke detectors)

and i guess building regulations are for new buildings with smoke detectors.

Well, although I basically agree with Shapa in that I would at least have expected the Fibaro sensors to set all detectors of in case one of them detects a fire (many of the DIY-bought sensors can do that), I do not see a legal obligation for them to do it this way.

Of course I don't know UK-building regulations, but here in The Netherlands we have de "bouwbesluit", which is like a building decree. All buildings have to comply to that, but older buildings can't of course be forced to live up to the rules that apply for new buildings. In regard to fire safety in those situations, there is an agreement that states that you have to keep the fire safety situation at least to the level that it was when the building permit was granted, in case of renovations you can improve that situation (but are almost never forced to do so!), but you are never allowed to go lower than that level.

So for smoke detectors, that would mean that in a house that currently has them installed according to a permit, you are not allowed to install fibaro detectors in stead of the existing ones, but if you are installing them in an older house, it's no problem.

If it's the best option is for everybody to decide for themselves...

What surprises me is that the firbaro smoke sensors can operate both using battery Power and off 12-24 VDC power. The argument for not having them all go off, is that it takes to much energy (killing battery life) to keep listening for the other sensors. But they should have a dual mode eg when operated on 12-24 they should listen, an then as needed sound the alarm.

All modern / new (including Nest Protect) fire / smoke alarms are interconnected.

    that's correct.

and it means that every one way direction protocol communication works the same

    as

    caddx

    networx

al those smoke detectors wil not work simultaneously

This is what i hoped for too ... or even better: a 230V power option. All modern houses (in the Netherlands at least) have AC powered smokedectors.

All in all i had high hopes for the new fibaro smoke sensor but, except from it's design/size (which i don't find very important for a smokesensor) and more advanced detection, it doesn't really distinguish from other sensors on the market.

IMHO it could have been a lot better: AC power capability, independently triggerable siren, emergency lighting, built-in sensors (light/temp/hum/motion) ... oh well ... V2 maybe

    Dear Users,

Thank you for all your opinions and first feedback. I understand that it can be useful to have for example 230VAC powered module with siren integrated, but please notice that one of the most important thing for us was to create smallest and EASY TO INSTALL device. IMHO there is many AC powered devices on the market however we consider modern home automation also as a spectrum of small, non-invasive instalation devices :->

    EdwinK,

except from it's design/size (which i don't find very important for a smokesensor)

We belive that good design is important in everything

Thank you for your answer Krystian, much appreciated! While I may have an other opinion, I respect your consideration and still think Fibaro does a very good job developing z-wave products! Keep up the good work for 2014!

That's really frustrating, I have 12V on 2 places where I wanted to put the sensors, but I dunno where to find the terminals... Maybe I will have to solder it but I really don't like to do that...

Fibaro, thanks to make a smoke sensors that is not ugly as all ones on the market.

Nothing under the plastic (on the 3 sensors I have ordered). I have english and polish documentation, screw and "chevilles" to keep it on the wall / ceiling, but not the connecting terminals...

My 3 sensors have also no power connecting terminals!

The design and size are very well done!!
