The disatvantage in comparison with Sonos is anyway sync stream to several rooms. I am not sure if there is any alternative to Sonos allowing the synconized streaming to several streams.

LogitechMediaServer can sync SqueezeBoxes (and their emulators). openHAB SqueezeBox binding/plugin has even proper command for this (

Since I have placed A LOT of wires when I was building my home I can use them now (I have placed 8 lowvoltage wires to every switch, every power outlet and every room corner and they are ending in 5 areas of my home where I can place some control for them like movement, small sound system, whetever I need) I'm planning to place some speakers in few rooms connected to RaspberryPi SqueezeBox emulators. Idea is to connect multiple USB sound cards to single RaspberryPi and run multiple SqueezeBox emulators on one Raspberry. LogitechMediaServer is recognizing SqueezeBoxes by MAC address which can be configured for each SqueezeBox emulator instance (it can be even 00:00:00:00:01 etc). At the beggining I was planning to run everything on relays controled by this wires but this would take too much time which I don't have so I've switched to z-wave and I'm thinking what to do with all those wires. I was even thinking about add small minijack sockets in various power outlets so I could connect audio speakers to them.

EDIT: Another thing which is nice in Raspberry connected to TV or something using HDMI is that we can control connected device with CEC. You can find some of my tests in this polish thread:
