An alternative to GPS and "ping" geolocation?

You can already used tasker to check if your phone is connected to your wifi and trigger some scenes to work. What for spend another amount of money on another set of device and an extra application.

I think I wrote about this in other threads, but I have already got something that sort of works for this, based on RPis. I'm migrating to a device called an estimote. Basically it does the same, but it is a dedicated bluetooth tag and it can run off a single button cell battery for two years straight. They're relatively cheap ($99 for three) and are quite small.

I use them to not only indicate whether someone is home, but also to determine the exact location in the house to use it as a set of presense detectors parallel to my motion sensors. The motion sensors will pick up that you go into a room, but if I go to my office and sit by my computer for an extended period, there will be no motion and the lights will start to dim, resulting in me having to jump around the room to get it's attention. By using the bluetooth triangulation, I can say that once the motion sensor has triggered, the hc2 is only allowed to start dimming the lights again once the presense detection registers that I have actually left the room once again.

Nice find Dalle. ill have a look at them.

As there is no tasker on iphone i use Geofancy and/or Geofency both work wel and one of them is free.

Though you will still need to have an webserver/php to get the commands to the hc.

Works pretty good and no batteries draining:)
