HCL: remote access does not work reliably

Question

Posted

For many months now, remote access does not work in the early morning hours and sometimes even for an entire day (e.g. last Sunday, 26 Oct.). This is very annoying and I do wonder who else is affected?

@Fibaro: please prioritize this issue as remote access is a critical feature of the HCL and must work without any interruptions on a 24/7 basis!!!

I havent had any problem with HClite remote access in two months. Could it be that your internet service is not very stable?

I have noticed that there are problems with remote access when upload speed is dramatically below 1Mb/s.

Remote access works with a proxy between you (browser or mobile app) and your HC2. This proxy is own by Fibaro. I guess (not sure) it is located in Poland. Depending on your provider and your location, you cannot access to your HC2 with a good network link.

Is this proxy used only because HC2 cannot handle HTTPS connexions? I don't know. But if it is the only point, i don't understand why this limitation still exists on the HC2. With a secure connexion, we could access the HC2 directly, with no proxy.

By now, i have stopped using the proxy. My router at home is configured to accept incoming connexions on a specific port and forward to the HC2 on port 80 (NAT setup). And guess what, it works very well. It is fast and very reliable. Conclusion : the proxy is the bad guy.

You could try this setup, just to check if your problem is due to the proxy.

Keep in mind it is completely unsecured and not recommended!

For advanced users, a VPN for incoming connexions could be a good solution...

I simply have a port translated on my router (82) to port 80 of the HC2:

82 > 80

This way we simply set in the iOS app that it should connect to our home ip:82 and then with the user login, works like a charm, also from the inside (LAN).

And this also makes sure port 80 is not necessary for HC2, so other apps can still use 80 to the outside.

    I am not an IT expert and need to have a reliable way to access my HCL remotely.

    @j.nowacki

    This is clearly not on a few installations. I'm sure you are aware of this...

    @tcviper @MalvinYNJ

    It is totally insecure to do that

    His login and password would be sent with no encryption over the internet. A really, really bad idea, don't you think?

    The only secure way to access directly his Fibaro Box would be to use a VPN or a reverse proxy inside his home network.

    What I don't understand: why don't we have access in the early morning hours (until 9:00 am CET) only? Is this something that can't be fixed easily?

    And again I ask Fibaro:

    Please prioritize this issue as remote access is a critical feature of the HCL and must work without any interruptions on a 24/7 basis!!!

    Remote access has never worked for me anymore on my HC2. I could not even control my devices via remote access. I have been using port forwarding, even though it's not secure, it is still more reliable than remote access.

    If you still struggle with remote access availability, please set controller to static IP and set DNS to 8.8.8.8

    Sorry but i am 3000 km away from home! How can i restart my HCL from away?

    There is no way to do that, if you do not have any access to controller. It is the same as for any computer when it freezes: you need to restart it manually.
