Can standard pocket temp sensor be used with RGBW Unit?

Hi All,

I have a couple of the Fibaro RGBW units and, amongst other things, I wondered if it was possible to connect a basic temp sensor (i.e. one that goes into a pocket in a hot water tank) to the RGBW unit to read it?

Currently I have three Resol PT sensors that connect to a Resol solar unit. One shows temp at bottom of my Heatbank, one at top and one is in the solar panels. They are just two-wire sensors.

What I would like to do is connect the top sensor (or rather T into it) to the RGBW sensor IN so that I can read the temps on my heatbank a) for information (its annoying having to walk up three floors to see if water's hot enough) b) I can then use that info, with a relay or two to turn on the central heating when we need some water heating up and either 1) put it on a timer for ten minutes or 2) keep reading temp and turn off when it reaches correct temp required.

So, will it work?

Also, if it will work, how long can the cable be? i.e. my RGBW unit is about 10-15m away from the temp sensor. I can trail a wire to it but I wanted to know if there was any restriction on it?

KR, Dave

It depends on temperature sensor - it should be 0-10V, I do not know which type is yours. Long cable might be the problem depending on how is it placed - it it goes along 230V AC wires, the measurements may be distorted.

All I know is that it should be 0-10v to be honest.

If I tap into it and give it a go it wont hurt right? I will just see what happens.

It would be tapped into with cat5e so just simple 24AWG copper.

    Thanks

dw89, I do not know you sensor so cannot assure you it will not get hurt during some experiments

Its just a resol pocket temp sensor (thousands used around the world for measuring temps of tanks/solar etc). Its a PT-1000 standard two wire sensor which attaches to any Resol solar controller (German). Have tried to find exact specs on resol.de but with no luck:(

A 2 wire PT-sensor won't work. That is a purely resistive sensor so no return voltage in that case. If it is 3 or 4 wire it may work depending on the sourcing voltage. Either you have to get a temperature transmitter/converter, make one your self ie balanced (Wheatstone) bridge or perhapps tap into the circut board at some point where/if the signal is converted. The cable length shouldn't be a problem though
