Fibaro Dimmer Compatible LED Bulbs

As many of you will know the Fibaro dimmers are TRIAC rather than trailing edge and do not play well with a lot of current LED bulbs or existing drivers.

As the vast majority of homes are still fitted with triac dimmers the lamp manufacturers are making progress to address the issue by improving the flexibility of the bulbs.

These new AOne LED GU10s from Aurora are a case in point. Triac compatible.

Please add to the subject as you come across more bulbs that work well with Fibaro.

I can confirm that OSRAM Superstar LED 5w dimmable bulbs work perfectly without any settings changed on the dimer v2.2. zero flicker too, will have to wait to see how long they last but very pleased so far.

If you can hear the dimmer buzzing like crazy then there is 99% chance its not compatible

Sorry to hear, but mine are working for over 2 months now.

(The ledares are the latest series from IKEA, it has a black/yellow packaging, old series are black and white packqging)

Triac dimmers are generally incompatible with LED lights. Even though they somewhat seem to work on some LED bulbs, the actual powerconsumption may rise because of the initial spike on the rise of the sine wave. Only trailing edge dimmers should be used with LED bulbs. Unfortunately, FIBARO haven't realized this yet. I only know of one z-wave MOSFET (trailing edge) dimmer, and that one works well, although I'd prefer the operating pattern of Fibaro's dimmers.

Case in point: IKEAs GU10 LED spot bulbs, the previous generation worked reasonably well with Fibaro dimmer, but the latest generation (which are really very good bulbs for the insanely low price), don't work well with the Fibaro Triac dimmer. They work well with MOSFET dimmers, though.

So, we are waiting for FIBARO to make a MOSFET dimmer. In the meantime there are alternatives.

    UPDATE 27.01.15:

Dimmers and LED bulbs really are a minefield. The last batch of IKEA GU10 LED bulbs I bought don't work well with either Fibaro dimmer nor the MOSFET dimmer I have. Quite hopeless, as it is almost impossible to tell beforehand what combinations will work, and what will not.

However, the LED units I have with separate drivers (mostly Tridonic drivers) dim very well with Fibaro dimmer.

Now, Soraa is shipping their fantastic new MR16 bulb without internal driver, so one get to choose a reliable driver separately (for instance a Tridonic driver). A far cry from the low cost IKEA solution, but it may be worth it in the living room. They don't deliver for some months yet, but I'll be back with test reports when they arrive.

So, we are waiting for FIBARO to make a MOSFET dimmer

That would be THE RIGHT MOSFET dimmer. If it is based off a simple Buck converter, it will give rise to it's own set of problems.

But yes, Fibaro really should consider moving to a trailing edge design as they are, in general, safer and better by design. Also, ringing (humming noises from the dimmer or bulb) would be a thing of the past and electrical interference would also be reduced significantly.
