Hue WakeUp, from 0 to 100

Question

Posted

I've connected my Hue lights to the HC2, and I can control them.

I would to use the Hue as a wakeup light and use the Hue 'transitiontime' option. Still work good.

But if I switch on the hue to its minimum brightness (1), it just pops on to a low level of light. It doesn't really smooth up to the given brightness level.

Any suggestions??

regards,

emiel

Create a scene and light up to 100% within a few seconds to have the gradual feeling.

That's not my problem. I can control the Hue's in every way via lua scripting.

My problem is when switch on the hue from off to on with the minimum brightness of 1. It gives too much light with a brightness of 1, it doesn't smoothly wake up.

With the hue app on the iphone it can wake up from 0 to 100 in a smooth way.

It could wel be a Hue bug....

Nothing to be done about it, the light has a minimum on level. This is because of the electronics (firmware) in the bulb to ensure longer burn time and good color reproduction from minimum on setting. I've contacted Philips directly to get a workaround, but nothing you can do about it. You'd need to alter the firmware in the bulb itself - and that is not something you can do.

Not a good way of doing it. Huge amount of trafic going to the hue bridge. The transition time is the right way to control the light for a gradual light increase, one command and the rest is handled by the bulb.

Thanks, I was already sort of worried this would be the answer....

If you really need gradual dimming fro true zero, the lifx bulbs can do that, but light quality is extremely poor at very low settings. Also, the light is way more bulky has poorer light distribution and only comes with a E27 fixture, so I disregarded that option (I'd rather have good light quality than extremely low light, and I have 18 GU10 hue bulbs already).

Besides that, Samsung has introduced some bluetooth bulbs (don't know if there is an API yet for those) and Osram has introduced their lightify range. I haven't tested either, but one of those might be able to dim correctly to zero. The Osram bulbs will interface directly with the Hue Bridge, so they are more or less plug and play. They are also slightly cheaper than the hue (but no colors then, only color temperature and dimming). I am waiting for my local supplier to receive new stock early in the new year to compare it to Hue. If you are interested, I'd be happy to report back when I've tested it.
