If you update and it all goes pearshaped....

Question

Posted

Anyone done this?

If you update and it's a nightmare, is it easy to rollback to 3.590?

Also, let say you save 3.590 config, move to 3.6 then 4.x can you delete everything (devices) to see if it works ok from starting 'afresh' but then, if no joy, go back to the saved version of 3.590? Will it still have old device id's or not if I had deleted to start again in 4.x?

Just questions going through my head before I make any decisions. Last thing I want is an unusable house/system/alarm and my wife shouting at me; then to try to go back and it's all gone too!

Have done it many times but currently having issues recovering after latest Beta.

You get the option to delete or keep devices during recovery so you can keep your devices.

They are on the z-wave chip and should be reimported into the software when you start after recovery. Mine is currently not doing that.

Like robmac said, recovery can go wrong. And wrong means remote session with Fibaro or worse... bricked and needing repair. Also, it's certainly different from a firmware upgrade/downgrade on a router. If I were you, I would at least follow the manual en try to boot into recovery mode, so you see the options on screen

    Hi Guys,

Cheers for the advice. I will be honest; I have NO experience at all with recovering to a backup or anything with Fibaro as all I've done is made some backups along the way from the day I bought it (just in case).

Are you saying that moving backwards in total is/can be a problem or just when you move to a Beta and then back etc OR is it just an issue going back if you HAVE devices, then delete them (whilst going forward) then try to go back and reinstate them?

Just trying to figure out what exactly is least dangerous issue? Is there a guide anywhere to help at all or not?

I'll try to explain this by giving some definitions. A backup is all the data (not firmware) of your HC2 minus custom icons. A restore puts all data back at that version. Backups are only compatible with certain versions, in firmware 3 this is not visible in version 4 you'll see if a backup is compatible or not. If you want to change your firmware, you want to do a recovery = special procedure on page 91 of the user manual. Recovery boots a different O/S, with a lower or equal version than your running system. This O/S does not run anything except "upgrade" of itself , erase of z-wave chip and restore of your database (as previously explained).

When you include or exclude devices, that changes the connection between your device and your HC2 and creates/deletes a device in your HC2 interface. So if you include/exclude something then go back to a previous version, you will have to redo that operation. Unless something changed in V4, that is... I mentioned custom icons. Since they're not in the backup, and a recovery erases your system, you have upload them and fix the devices.

And, ahem, now a "happy new year" or my wife kills me

    Peter,

Many thanks for the explanation. So this is what I understand at the moment......

    1) Backups are specific to your firmware version e.g I have about 8 on 3.590

    2) It doesn't matter what firmware I move to (or back to I guess) the devices I have included will be there no matter what

    3) If I want to go to, say, 4.x in the future my current devices will all be there

    4) If I then use 'recovery' (pg.91) to go back from 4.x to 3.590 in the future that, even though it can be an issue doing a recovery, all my included devices will still be there as they're still in z-wave chip.

    5) Ultimately the 'backups' I've made in 3.590 will not work in 4.x or anything else as they're 3.590 specific configs? So, I am guessing that, if I recover from 4.x back to 3.590 that my original 8 backups will still be there?

That sound about right or am I still misunderstanding? Thanks very much though you've made it obvious the difference between backups and firmware.

dw89, in backups we store database and copy of z-wave chip so

    1) yes, backup is compatible for version so in 3.x you can't use backup for version 1.x like on 4.x you can't use backup from 3.x. Ater recovery you should update to that same version or the closed

    example

you got backup on 3.590 so you first doing update to 3.600 and then recover it

    2) yes backup recover state of device from date of backup (if you added after backup new device it will be missing)

    3) yes

    4) yes but you will not saw them because database will be empty - after using recovery from 3.590 they will work again

    5) we not deleting backups, we added function autobackup on every update so you should got backups from all your versions
