Lights randomly turning on !!!!

Question

Posted

Today's problem is that lights have started turning on randomly throughout my house. I have changed very little in my system for the past 3 months so it's not down to something I could have done.

I am literally sitting at the HC2 web interface turning a light circuit off in my bedroom only to see it automatically turn itself back on again. I have removed 5 bulbs from my sons bedroom (who now won't go back to sleep, thank you very much for that little weekend gift Fibaro) and will have to remove 10 or so bulbs from my bedroom before I go to bed tonight.

Maybe Fibaro have released a hot fix for away from home presence simulation .. haha!

On top of all of the other daily trauma that we have to put up with by supporting this company, has anyone else experienced this?

I am running 3.590 beta.

EDIT: 3 hours later, another Saturday night wasted and still lights are turning on in the house in 4 rooms. Reverted to  2 older backups, spent ages turning off scenes and even did a complete mesh rebuild. Now I have to get back on a ladder to remove bulbs. Thank you Fibaro!

I thought about that. Has someone hacked my system, but if they had they are very tiresome and boring as they only turn certain lights on and seemingly are sitting in front of their pc waiting for me to turn them off. It doesn't make any sense. I'm sure if someone did have my password they would just change it remotely and lock me out.

I woke up hoping someone would reply to my post with something helpful as the lights, where I have left light bulbs in, are all blazing away. Also one of the my Fibaro wall plugs is turning on constantly as well.

In 2015 I have made 1 change to a scene, created 1 new VD, made some minor changes to configs, added associations to two dimmer modules... that's about it. The system has been pretty much untouched as I have all but given up on developing it until Fibaro come out with a stable release or I leave the HC2 for another controller.

I definitely did not change anything in my HC2 in the past 3-4 days. The problem started yesterday afternoon, however i have had other problems with hardware including:

    - front door electric locks randomly opening - in the end I removed the fibaro relay from the front door effectively removing it from HC2 control

    - fibaro blind module worked fine on my skylight and then started randomly opening the skylight and then eventually forced it open (one rainy night - you can imagine how much I cursed Fibaro that night); replaced module for a 2nd one, the same thing happened, stopped using skylight. eventually after talking to UK support installed a relay. it seems to work but i haven't used it for months as it's too cold to open

    - window in my office randomly opening and closing; still happening to this day, although since the lights started turning on yesterday it looks like it's stopped. i was planning to remove the fibaro blind module and replace with a relay as I did with the skylight

    - none of my electric windows really work with the full functionality that fibaro still to this day sells ie all i can do it fully open and fully close them, no positioning, the interface is almost always wrong showing windows fully open when they are in fact fully closed and it took me months (endless phone calls and discussions with support) to even get the windows to just open and close.

These are the main examples I can think of that are in a similar category to the lights and wall plug turning on by themselves.

The turning on does not always happen instantly, sometimes within a second or two sometimes within minutes.

    Anyone?

PS: It is 3x Fibaro Dimmer Modules, 1x Fibaro Relay Module and 1x Fibaro Wall Plug that are turning on constantly. They are ALL in different rooms. I don't have a single scene that would cover all of them. In fact 3 of the 5 are not even referenced in scenes. I'm struggling to see how they are related in anyway. They aren't on the same electrical circuits. They are not in the same vicinity.

I have changed my password. I have rebooted both android phones that connect to the HC2 and not opened the app. I have then deleted every device in the access panel. I have removed associations, turn off any scene that might have as remote chance of do this.... done so many things I can't actually remember them all now off the top of my head. In fact unless someone else has experienced this I think it's one for support whom I am awaiting a response from.

    I have run this code:

    fibaro:call(1,'requestNodeNeighborUpdate',1)

    fibaro:debug('Rediscover all node ')

Removed all android devices from access control (even though i'm unsure how this will help), rebooted both phones, not reconnected to HC2 using android app, removed associations, change parm 30 on dimmer modules to not change state with an alarm ie from option 4 to option 1, Reset the HC2 password, reverted to two older backups, reverted back to current backup, deleted the new VD I created, turned off any scene that might cause the problem .... and lots more.

Unless someone has experienced this I guess it's one for support. Maybe my HC2 is just on the way out.

EDIT: After deleting every scene and taking more measures to ID the root cause, Adam from Fibaro UK Support contacted me (on a Sunday!!! wow, thanks

/emoticons/default_smile.png" alt=":)" srcset="https://forum.fibaro.com/uploads/emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> and suggested I delete my remote access account which I did and SO FAR SO GOOD!

I am restoring to a backup to reverse the damage that I had done

Please login or register to see this image.

/emoticons/default_icon_razz.gif" alt=":-P" />  I will now need to go back and add associations, change back settings on the devices I played with and then fingers crossed it will all be back to "normal"

The question is, can Fibaro figure out what happened to my remote account? Was I hacked (I doubt it)? Was it corrupted (maybe)?

    Thanks again Adam!

In case anyone is wondering my home automation system is actually not ok.

Lights are still randomly turning on, Windows are randomly opening. Yesterday when it was raining the skylight opened up. I am still waiting for someone in Poland to log in and figure out what is happening. If there is no resolution today then the house goes back to the dark ages tonight. I have to turn power off to everything bar the heating which is inexorably linked to the hc2.

For 3 nights in a row we have had disrupted sleep!

Lights turning on all night, blinds opening at 1am, Windows opening.

    Still waiting for a resolution.

Guess no one on the forum has experienced this yet.

Man! Sounds like your having a bit of a rough time with it.

Just liked to say that i have only noticed it once but it did not cause any grief.

I have 2 white LED strips running either side of the room, full length and just a standard bayonet bulb with a fibaro dimmer behind the switch, neutral wire connected.

about 3 weeks ago, just got in to bed, turned of the LEDS and about 2-3 mins later, the standard bulb came on @ about 2% and went straight off (all happened within a second)

Ever since this, not had any other issue.

I have a Fibaro eyeball sensor that turns lights off if no one is in that room after 10 mins but don't think that has anything to do with it.

As for me, I have no issues now and all is running smoothly (well, apart from getting Text To speech working on my sonos but that's neither here nor there.)

I hope you do get it sorted once for for all.

I know this is a bit extreme, but if it was me, i'd flatten the config of the box, change all of my passwords to ones i have never used before and start adding devices in one by one and test for a while to see how it goes, then add more and test and so on...

    Good luck in your venture.

I have over 120 devices, over 50 scenes and around 15 full blown virtual devices, that I can think of. The idea of starting from scratch and adding devices one by one is associated in my mind with jumping off a bridge.

I spoke too soon in me previous post. The problem has not gone away but is as bad as it was at its worst. My heating has gone mental. My son's bedroom was over 27C again last night and tonight. In the end we have just turned the boiler down so that it can't overheat any rooms.

Lights are randomly turning on (in nearly every room), so we have removed bulbs, Windows and blinds open regularly so we have turned the whole window/blind circuit off. at the mains.

Tech support have looked at it and are not at the bottom of the problem yet. The last suggestion was to delete and add back the devices that are playing up which at my best guess right now is around 30-40 devices (at a minimum).

Have you tried disconnecting the LAN cable to the HC2 overnight? Clearly not going to solve your problem and will disable a load of stuff in the process but it should at least identify whether it is the HC2 acting randomly or whether there is an outside influence....

    Thanks for the suggestion gembrain.

After a week and a half of testing, changing settings etc I deleted 2x devices, 2x virtual devices and set polling to 0 in the config. It seems to be working as per normal for the past week. Still don't know exactly what was causing it.

my guess is a virtual device that was refreshing very quickly or a scene!... my lights went made last week and i had just that very day done a ping virtual device to check presence of mobile phones via ip...

did not bother reporting it to fibaro because they never * listen! just put up with the fact virtual devices SUCK!

Anyone that has bought FIbaro products should be aware that this may happen to your system. After 6 weeks the problem has still not be resolved by Fibaro tech support. I hate that I have to even share these experiences, but until the problem is resolved I will not stop telling everyone,

Deanparry - it does not make sense that it is VDs or scenes as some of the devices randomly turning on are not referenced in a single VD or Scene AND at one stage I deleted all the VDs AND every scene and it still kept happening!!!

Something has corrupted on my install and Fibaro support do not know what to do to fix it. It is now 2;28am and I am writing this email wide awake as the same problem has started again.

My latest email sent to Fibaro a few minutes ago:

    "I HAVE HIT ROCK BOTTOM!!!!

FOR 3 HOURS BLINDS RANDOMLY OPENING, SKYLIGHT OPENING, LIGHTS TURNING ON.
IT IS 2:23AM AND MY WIFE AND I HAVE NOT SLEPT ALL NIGHT.
YOU NEED TO LOG INTO MY HC2 AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING ON.
    THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!!
I HAVE ADDED ONE VD SINCE THE LAST BOUT OF OF STUPIDITY.
THIS CAN NOT CONTINUE. IT IS IMPACTING ME AND MY FAMILY BEYOND ANYTHING THAT IS REASONABLE!!!!!"

The point is that it has probably been happening for longer than 3 hours, but I was out for dinner, returned home to go to bed and haven't slept yet. I am so wound up I will not sleep for a few hours and I am waiting for my son to be impacted just to top it all off. I have changed very little since this issue started.
I also updated tech support just now to tell them that I have also added about 6 Fibaro Wall plugs. There is no good reason for this to be happening especially as I have not been tinkering with the system much in the past 4+ months. I have been waiting patiently for a stable v4, but it looks like I am really stuffed now.

What would you do in this situation?
    - Throw the HC2 in the bin and buy another controller?
    - Start from scratch and rebuild a system with 130+ devices, 20+ Satel alarm sensors, 50+ scenes, 21 rooms?

Tomorrow I have to take drastic steps to fix this. Maybe a complete rebuild is on the cards. Maybe it's time to leave Fibaro HC2 for something else.

EDIT: I think this may be a RAM related issue or at least an issue related to up time on the system. I changed my HC2 IP address over the weekend and forgot to update a VD that is used to reboot the HC2, so in fact my HC2 has not been rebooting every night for the past 6 days or so. I have fixed the VD so the HC2 will now reboot regularly. Maybe this will stem the issue for the time being. I have read about RAM issue on this forum previously, so maybe those of you that have had memory issues could also face the same problem, I have been experiencing, if you leave your HC2s running without rebooting regularly. After 3am now, going to TRY to go to sleep. Waiting for wife to go completely mental tomorrow. I have a call tomorrow at 8:30am, let's see how I function again on a few hours sleep.

EDIT: 4am now, still have not slept tonight, light turned on again in bedroom. Reboot did nothing to fix problem. Now taking bulbs out of circuits.

What happened next, can't you switch the light circuit off at the fuse board just to keep the lights off at night.

That is precisely what I did and what I have been doing every night since.

I am still waiting for Fibaro to find out what is going on.

Admittedly it did take me a while to finally make my way to the consumer unit. I suppose it has something to do with assuming my system should be working fine and being half asleep.

    In response to earlier posts:

    - I have removed all devices and added them back on v4.040 across two HC2s. Very little device config no scenes, no virtual devices, new passwords etc etc The problem persists.

    - Disconnecting the LAN and even turning the HC2 off did not stop the problem. Yes, you heard it correctly... turning the HC2 off did NOT stop the problem.

Fortunately it was not a bank holiday on Friday in Poland, so I had support sniffing around and making changes. Still testing the system. Still not resolved.

That's crazy that turning the HC2 off did not fix it. Sounds like either a hardware fault or some kind of radio interference that is able to turn the lights on

Ask your neighbors if they have a baby monitor or something similar.

Yes, it is crazy. If there is radio interference it still shouldn't be able to send on/off commands to zwave modules, otherwise the standard would be appalling flawed from a security perspective, however I won't rule anything out right now. As far as I am aware there are no babies in the immediate houses next to mine and even if there were it would be rubbish if they affected my house.

EDIT: Of course I forgot about my baby monitor. It operates at 900MHz. Now I'm thinking I might turn it off and see what happens. I can't do that now as I am testing the system as agreed with Fibaro. If the monitor is causing the problem I might just go completely mad

I think Fibaro keep proposing that I might have a security breach, but the behaviour is not that of a person playing around with my system and I have changed my passwords etc several times now. I think it's a bug in the modules, they have created flawed associations with each other or they just are just outright buggy. Nothing else explains it right now other than external radio interference.

I had the same issue at home with 2 lights for several weeks turning on in the night....... tried everything (also with support) after the latest update it was gone. So no resolution for you, but you are not the only guy..

I wonder if there is a short circuit on the s1 that's is making the module think there is a switch being pressed so it is turning on the light

It is reassuring to hear that I am not the only person this is happening to. Thank you for sharing this.

The problem started as far back as around the middle of last year. It started with single devices. My skylight would open for no apparent reason. A window would open. A single light would come on. My front door would randomly open. Yes, I had a Fibaro Relay connected to my front door lock.

I at first thought it was faulty modules, so I changed or removed them one by one. I also thought the lights might be due to a scene I was running for automatic lighting.

Then the problem deteriorated to the point where there were too many events that could be put down to faulty modules and some of the devices were not referenced in a single scene or virtual devices so it couldn't be down to that.

I am now on v4.040 on both HC2 and it is still happening. Support are still trying to figure out what is happening.

That wouldn't make sense as the number of effected devices has grown from 1 to probably 60-80 in a few months and no one has been playing around with the wiring.
