HC2 connection problems

Question

Posted

Hi, I am a new user and I just bought a HC2 with some gear.

My computer is a Macbook pro running Yosemite (up to date).

I have connected the HC2 to my time capsule LAN port, and to power. Blue light are on the two LED to the right - power and LAN. No light on the internet icon.

I downloaded the "Fibaro finder" for MAC, and tried opening it. It seems to me that the file is without file-ending, so it opens in "text-editor" by default. I added a ".dmg" to the end of the filename, and it eventually opened the Fibaro finder.

The program seems to find my HC2, but when I try to connect to the IP address, my browser just stops. After a while i get a message saying that: Safari can't open the page 192.168.81.1 because the server where this page is located isn't responding.

I have disconnected and restarted the Time capsule (router) and the HC2 several times, but it always seems to display the default static address: 192.168.81.1

I have tried with Safari, Firefox and Opera and I have even tried with IE from a Windows computer (with the windows version of Fibaro finder).

I am running out of things to try now.

Maybe I am doing something wrong - I am a little embarrassed that I haven't even gotten the thing started properly, but I need some help.

If you have some idea of what can be wrong, or if there is some important information that I have left out here, please let me know!

Do you use the DHCP-Funktion on the TimeCapsule?

What's the IP address and subnet mask of your computer?

    My IP address: 192.168.1.5

    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP

    These are from network preferences.

Time capsule (router) info: From Airport Utility program

    IP: 192.168.100.10

    LAN IP: 192.168.100.10

    Under "Network" it says

    Router mode: Off (bridge mode)

when I try changing this to "DHCP only" - it suggests a DHCP range of 192.168.100.2 to 192.168.100.200, and I can only change the last digits (after the last dot).

I tried the Angry IP scanner. Here are the results with the programs suggested IP range.

    Total time: 29.5 sec
Average time per host: 0.1 sec

    IP Range
    192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.255

    Hosts scanned: 254

    Hosts alive: 3

I tried changing the ip-range to hit the HC2, but no luck, I guess.

    Total time: 8.2 sec

Average time per host: 4.1 sec

    IP Range
    192.168.81.0 - 192.168.81.2

    Hosts scanned: 2
    Hosts alive: 0

Ok... What happened is that the HC2 was reset and is not in DHCP but in STATIC IP mode...

It's on page 88 of the user manual, but I'll give a summary:

In this case, the HC2 will have following settings:

    • IP Address: 192.168.81.1
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway address: 192.168.81.1

You say that's confirmed by the HC2 finder.

Your IP is 192.168.1.5 and that is not on the same subnet, although both devices are on the same LAN. Not good.

When static IP has been set on HC2, it is possible to connect HC2 directly to Ethernet port of a PC (or mac), however PC network settings must be set to match those of HC2:

    • PC/MAC IP: 192.168.81.5
    • Subnet mask:: 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway address: 192.168.81.1

You connect the ethernet of the HC2 to the ethernet of the mac, only those two devices
Then you can type 192.168.81.1 and in configuration, lan settings, set the "connection type" to dhcp.

Now you can connect everything as before and use HC2 finder to find out the address assigned by your router.

Thanks for your great post, petergebruers.

After some trial and error, I managed to gain access to the HC2 and change the LAN setting to DHCP. I still have some issues with "double NAT"

    Thanks again!

Try connect your HC2 to a router instead of directly plug into the internet wall plug.  In my application, I cannot get LAN connection to the HC2 with direct connection to the wall plug.   I need to connect a router to the wall plug and HC2 plug into the router, then the fibaro finder can find HC2.

Even though I got connected, the system was unstable - and I lost connection to the HC2 several times when I changed to DHCP mode. The problems was (like pointed out earlier connected to "double NAT").

I once again put the HC2 in static IP mode (192.168.81.1).

I have now put my main router to IP 192.168.81.254, with dhcp range 101-200 and I have finally managed to put my "Time machine" (wifi router) in working bridge mode. I tried this first, but it seems that I needed a save and restart of both routers for them to work properly together.

    Now it works fine!

Once again thanks for everyones help!
