I am sure someone here put one in an outdoor junction box and it worked

A fibaro Universal Binary Sensor and any standard "off the shelf" magnet or outdoor spring switch?

Yup, I've done that (FGK-101 in a box), but only for lighting purposes, not for alarm. That's why I was asking "What kind of application?"

Yesss, but take care: the UBS can't be run on batteries, it takes 30-40 mA continuous power. As a bonus it acts as a Z-wave repeater.

Sorry for the delay in the reply.

I want it to alarm a gate.

    Hi all,

I also thought about that for my entrance gate. Also very useful because you know if the gate is open/closed.

But I thought putting the Door-Sensor into a weatherproof box might not work because the magnets are not strong enought.

Did you use a stronger magnet on the one side to get this working?

    Cheers

The working distance for the magnet is +/- 1 cm. I've read that other users bought stronger magnets that worked up to +/- 2 cm. For me it worked because it was a door on a garden shed, the shed and door are made of wood so it was easy to screw the magnet and the box onto the door.

For a gate, you could buy a waterproof switch and connect it to the door sensor in a IP55 or IP56 box. The FGK-101 was designed for that, it has a screw terminal to attach a switch. I use that for inside purposes (I use FGK-101 as a kind of remote control) but I have not build the waterproof version of it.

If it's for alarm purposes, a tamper proof solution would seem best. But I cannot recommend one... I think it is difficult for a manufacturer to design a "one size fits all" sensor because of the huge variation in design of a gate.

BTW The battery of FGK-101 will last for >1 year, so that seems quite reasonable to put it in a box that is difficult to reach. Also, you won't compromise the sealing because you don't have to open it that many times...
