Looks like it has a good head of steam. Lot of devices in the z-wave database.

It's a cool project but like all projects that use the open z-wave stack there are certain things that don't function, and never will.

I.E. Full lock support...

    Thanks,

    I will keep following

I have been toying with contributing to something like this and have watched for a while to see if it was a good bet and use of my time. Nice to know others think it is cool.

Would be nice to have a commercial product but none of them seem to be going very quickly just now. All have their issues. FIBARO gets better but it is taking a long time. If we ever get plugins it will be better but not as clean an architecture as the project.

Big plus for me is to hold the logic in something the can use any standard. Pick and choose a mix of technologies and migrate between without changing the logic of the automation. The v2 looks like it may be a real option.

On the open z-wave the encryption is not an issue for me. I have followed open z-wave for a while but it is no more than a driver layer so of little interest on its own. Happy with what it does though as I won't use locks or base my alarm on z-wave not because of the encryption but due to the underlying design of z-wave that does not guarantee delivery. It is just not reliable enough for what I want. OK for controlling temperature and lights etc but even then I make sure my boiler overheat is still a good old fashioned thermostat. If I set my alarm I want to know it is set and if I lock I want it locked.

    Hi roberts,

openHAB seems a good open source project and with a real ambition, support for multiple technologies is a good point, today the basics for a perfect integration are Z-Wave, EnOcean and KNX (for rich guys

but, i hate the openHAB user interface and my HC2 is more powerful

You don't see the interface as a challenge that is relatively easy to fix? Eclipse Dev environment on v2 should make that a breeze.

You are spot on that HC2 has so much power but my processors rarely are more than ticking over because it is hard to leverage all that potential just now.

Plugins would help a lot but blocked from developing just now so frustration is showing. I suppose that is why I start thinking I should be looking at other options. HC2 is just developing too slowly and has too many limitations put on it by design. All that power that could be used but it is all locked away because of some perceived and probably spurious "Security" reason. What is the point of that?

    Hi,

OpenHAB isn't as plug-'n-play and nice-looking as HC2, but it's way cool because of it's overall comprehensiveness, openness and community support.

You won't notice at a quick glance, but under the hood, it's incredibly powerful.

It includes many modules to interface to smart home technologies, zWave just being one of them.

openHAB also supports all major standards (ZigBee, KNX, EnOcean, ...) and many proprietary ones (1-wire, Homematic, ...) and even stuff

    like TVs and air conditions.

It provides full scripting control, including Java programming level and persistent storage to allow for programming and statistics.

UI is modular, too, a couple of replacements to the default 'ClassicUI' already exist or are under development (check out 'habmin2').

It's Open Source, you can simply contribute your own plugins or devices.

I'm using openHAB with a number of Fibaro devices.

zWave support is great thank to a very active community. Many Fibaro device users, therefore mature implementation, but also many

other devices in use throughout the community and thus well-supported.

The only thing that doesn't work yet is where Fibaro is applying proprietary techniques and doesn't provide sufficient information to help people properly

implement them (examples: how to use the IN/OUT ports on the FGRGBWM-441, or OTA device firmware updates).
