Long time HAer - new to Z Wave. Alarm system recommendations?

Hi All,

I'm a long time Home Automation enthusiast (on UKHA_D since 2002). I currently have a very fully-featured HA system comprising:

Comfort wired alarm

Extensive CBus lighting system with DLT LCD wall controllers etc

CBus RF system

Homevision Pro

Homeseer

CBus to Homevision gateway

All the above integrating whole house audio and video

CCTV

Electric door locks, garage door openers etc.

7Km+ Cat5e everywhere

etc etc...

Unfortunately I'm selling and moving in a few months and will lose most of the hard wired kit. The new house is a standard new build and as normal, the developer isn't interested in running extra cabling at first fix

I like the look of Z Wave but have never played with it before. The HC2 looks interesting too. A few questions I have to start off:

  1. What wire-free alarm system would you recommend I look at that has good interoperability with Z Wave. So I can set scenes and trigger events on alarm state etc. I'm thinking a dedicated alarm system (non-monitored) for reliability rather than using Z Wave (or other) components.
  2. Are there any really good wall switches that have status LED's etc that work on the Z Wave network and don't require a Neutral connection. Or is my best choice a dumb momentary switch and a Fibaro dimmer (more choice I guess)?
  3. I will be taking my Homevision Pro - does that integrate well or not with HC2 (with Z Wave interface for HV of course)?

Many thanks,

Paul.

Anyone got any recommendations on alarm systems that integrate with Z-Wave?

You can create your own alarm by using motion sensors and door/window sensors. As for alarm panels HC2 supports Satel

Thanks. How reliable is using HC2 and Z-wave generally for an alarm? Wondering if it can be relied on for general alarm functions?

Do you know of any docs/white papers/connection diagrams etc for the Satel support? Still finding my way around the resources which seem a little sparse in places.

    Thanks,

    Paul.

Based on running v4 I would definitely not recommend using z wave for an alarm. Too many issues currently for it to be reliable. There have been reports of false breaches of Aeon 4 in 1 and also issues with the Fibaro motion sensor as well. It's getting close to being stable but not reliable just yet

As for the Satel I have no idea. Sorry

    Ok many thanks.

I guess using the binary modules to integrate HC2 with any alarm panel is one way of doing it?

Depending on the output of your alarm you could do that. You could then create a scene based on that to trigger the Z Wave alarm function to turn lights on eye and also push a notification to your phone
