OK to upgrade?

Question

Posted

Hi,

I am currently running my Home Center 2 on firmware version 3.590, and wonder if version 4 of the software now is stable enough to be downloaded and install. As it is now, on this older version 3.590, it is working fine and I have not had any problems with it so far. This fact has made me a bit reluctant to upgrade to version 4, but since it first release, it has gone through several releases, and I see that the current version is 4.042. So what is your advice on this? Upgrade, or wait a little while longer?

If you are using your system, suggest not to update unless you are willing to go into testing.

upgraded to every nieuw 4.xx version, no real problems. Occasionally I ended up with a dead device, soft reconfigure solved that.

cheers

I have upgraded from v3.6 yesterday and get noticed any issues at this stage. 2 of my FGMS lost their child device names and rooms but that was an easy fix

Decision is simply two options:

1. If you are prepared to perform troubleshooting, soft-reconfigure, hard-reconfigure, exclude-include, etc for few or some or many or all of the z-wave devices you have, and able to accept that some non-fibaro z-wave devices may stop working in v4.x (even though it works fine in v3.x), then go ahead to upgrade.

2. If you are not prepared and/or no time to spare and/or no means to go through any kind of troubleshooting, reconfiguration, etc for few or some of many or all of the z-wave devices you have, and unable to accept that some non-fibaro z-wave devices may stop working in v4.x, then do not upgrade.

You can read through all the various 4.xxx threads to have a feel of how much pain it can turn out to be, or even how some have zero issue one moment but turn into a nightmare the next moment, or even how some have no issue for several releases but hit with a list of issues on next release. Have a look at the bugzilla too which has a long list of 3rd-party z-wave devices not working or crippled (some function works, some don't) in v4.x.

In short, the new revised terms and conditions that need to be accepted before upgrade will proceed, it states it all and if you are not ready for any * that can hit the fence, do not proceed.

No one can guarantee a stable system after upgrade, not even Fibaro (hence changing the T&C prompt and agreeable before any upgrade proceeds), not even old timers/gurus who have been around in this forum longer than I have been.

Thank you all very much for your replies! I conclude that there still are some issues in the case I install the 4.X-firmware and upgrade. But will the transition later on be more smooth with coming versions of the 4.X-firmware? Or will the upgrade from version 3 to version 4 always be a bit "rough"?

It has smoothen a little comparing 3.x to 4.030 and 3.x to 4.042 (current latest). Whether the smoothness is acceptable is subjective, hence the elaborated sharing I have posted earlier on. Most 3rd-party devices ain't full functional in v4.042, not even Aeon Labs' and Greenwave which are the more common brands of z-wave devices out there.

If your setup is pure Fibaro, chances are the upgrade will be fine with 4.042. The possibility of breaking or abnormal behaviour is still there though much lower risk. Fibaro battery-operated devices are usually those which will face some issues after upgrade and may need soft-reconfigure or exclude-include.
