HC2 unresponsive when internet connection down

Question

Posted

Hello,

I have noticed that the HC2 becomes slow and unresponsive to commands when my internet connection is down or very slow.

I live in an area where the Internet is really choppy and sometimes the link is full, but why this is affecting the HC2 behavior is really strange to me. first the application loads very slowly on my android/ipad/iphone(locally on the wifi) then if you try to turn the light on for example it take almost a minute to execute the command!!! same thing happens if you are connected directly on the HC2 via the laptop browser(also on wifi locally). if the internet connection is fine, everything works like a charm. can someone help? why is the status of my Internet connection affecting my HC2 locally??? I am NOT using remote access.

thanks for your help.

Danny

I have heard similar experience but for firmware upgrades. Slow or choppy upstream speed tends to affect the firmware upgrade (or failure to upgrade and had to re-try).

May be something Fibaro can shear some light on HC2/HCL dependency on internet connectivity.

Well,

two moths later and now in version 4.053 I have the same experience. For some reason my internet connection slowed down and my HC2 became (almost) completely unresponsive with delays up to 1 hour before a command was executed.

Only after I connected the Hc2 directly to the cablemodem (through a switch, not through powerline-adapters anymore) everything went back to normal.

Fibaro, please shed some light on this issue - and how to avoid it if possible...  We all increasingly depend on our smart house/z-wave/Fibaro system solutions as time passes and our systems increase in size and complexity - ultimately also in an emergency situation. Yes I got a ups to back up grid for the HC2 and my modem/switch - and yes I have a secondary ISP w/ a mobile usb-modem as fallback for primary ISP w/fiber - but at the end of the day for autonomous operations: I like to know more about how to keep my home functional.

BTW gents, any real life experience based on association between devices instead of HC2-control wo internet?

Associations work without a static controller (like an hc2). So it is fast and doesn't depend on the HC2. There are limitations, but that is not the question here. There is maybe one thing I should mention. When your HC2 is down, devices still want to report to it. That may slow down things. If I remember well, I once tested a Universal Binary Sensor associated with a relay. The controller was powered off. Switching on was instant, but switching off in the first 5 seconds had some delay. After that 5 seconds, response was fast. Anecdotal information, no doubt, ...

Peter, did you do any testing with the HC2 powered on, but no internet connection as well? I have a feeling that it is not quite the same. A basic test should be easy, but explaining the results could prove more difficult.

I've unplugged the ethernet of my HC2, but I have not restarted it. I don't have any associations. When I started rebuilding my network some weeks ago, I decided to do without associations. I have no delays, when I operate the following: minimote to several devices, motion sensors to relays, UBS to relays. Oh, and finally I've tested a Fibaro Door/Window sensor to a relay via sceneActivation. No delays ither. I'm running 4.062. After this test I've restarted my HC2 (without ethernet). I think it took longer to become responsive, but after that the same tests have no delay.

Peter, checked. Could you check with the HC2 plugged to the router, but no ISP service. (Yes, should have done it myself, but wife, kids and Xmas does not constitute a good setting for testing smart house or internet connections...)

So the first test left only one LED "on", the rightmost one. This test leaves the two rightmost LED lit (meaning ethernet OK but no internet). I redid my tests, it makes no difference, it just works.

So still som digging to be done. I´m still on 4.056 - it could of course be that Fibaro has fixed what ever it was in the new beta, but i would not be surprised if turns out to be something else. Time will tell...
