Razberry as extender?

Question

Posted

Hi

I want to be able to use my aeon remote to open the external car gate. I understood that using a powered module (or an aeon extender) to bring zwave signal there is not a good solution because of the delay introduced by the mesh network.

Has anyone tried to connect a Razberry as a secondary controller? Would the signal from razberry be good to operate aeon remote and run a scene on hc2?

Thanks!

R

Yesterday, I did a test. I took my MiniMote outdoors. I was able to trigger my network, at 30 meters away from my gate. I've read this remark that "a portable controller would be too slow because of the network". But wasn't that in a *very* specific context? I can't seem to find it, but if I remember well, it was about detecting the flashes of the headlights of a car. I also own an Aeon Key Fob, the Z-Wave plus model, but at the moment it's excluded. But I'd expect it to work at least as well as the older MiniMote.

Totally forgot... I own a Razberry as a test controller. I am not an expert, but the topic of "secondary controller" is not an easy one, judging from the posts here and on other forums. I am going to assume here that you have a gate that is very far away from your Z-Wave network, but that you are lucky enough to hive WiFi or ethernet nearby. It's an odd assumption, because you will have a module to open the gate, near the gate, so you *do* have Z-Wave there? Anyway, lets assume Z-Wave doesn't work near your gate. What certainly works is a Razberry as a standalone controller near the gate. Then you program the Razberry, to use the HC2 API, to trigger stuff on your HC2. To be honest, I have not done it in that directions (from Raz to HC2) but I have programmed it the other way around: use lua on HC2 to switch on/off a module connected to the Raz. From Raz to HC2 is certainly possible, but I have not studied the Raz API in depth.

Is this delay a huge problem? I mean the gate does take some time to open? Would the extra second/seconds of lag really be a deal breaker that is worth the hustle?

Thanks for chiming in, that's what I thought to. I've found back the earlier topic, from the OP, where Mr. Nowacki mentions network issues:

    Hi,

I have Zwave signal near the gate but the feeling is that it works randomly - most of the time, remote is just not able to communicate with HC2. I will try to do a soft reconfigure with the remote close to the gate but I was looking for a better solution - yes, installing a secondary HC2 near the gate would probably do, but it's a bit too expensive as a solution

/emoticons/default_icon_smile.gif" alt=":-)" /> that's why I was hoping to be able to use Razberry for this.

Will update with results once I do the soft reconfigure.

    Thanks

A "soft reconfigure" won't change the Z-Wave routing. I recommend you to do a "Mesh network reconfiguration" of the mains powered devices close to your HC2, then the modules leading to the gate and finally the remote. This is more work than selecting "Entire Z-Wave network" from the menu, but it's easier to understand the feedback in the status window.
