The only way I can imagine HomeKit activated with just a software update in existing Home Centers would be a special deal with Apple allowing Fibaro to use the power of the Intel Atom CPU integrated in the Home Center 2 to do the encryption job software-level, instead by the mandatory Apple authentication coprocessor built into all "Built for HomeKit" certified accessories.

Everything about HomeKit is covered under NDA but Apple tells us about that particular chip in their latest

. Apple does not compromise with security. See their fingerprint management scheme relying on low-level hardware encryption (aka Secure Enclave coprocessor) for TouchID devices in the same document.

Eye opener... Thanks for sharing the link. Solid info.

I'd love to see a company putting onto market a new kind of cheap devices like those micro modules from Fibaro or Qubino, but with the upcoming Bluetooth Smart Mesh embedded instead of Z-wave. Such a company would bring HomeKit to the entire home right out of the box with no need for any central home automation hub.

"Bluetooth Smart Mesh" - a nice theoretical idea. In practical real world use, there may be challenges which may not be any better than z-wave, may be even worse (e.g. interference and signal range).

We'll see soon (2017-2018 I think). BT and Wi-Fi indeed share the same 2.4 GHz frequency range, but

are not in common with surrounding Wi-Fi channels, especially the 3 advertising channels designed to avoid interference with Wi-Fi. Nominal range is now 50 meters (over 160 feet) and adding a mesh topology, you'd need a very large house with very few electric modules within to undergo connexion drops. BT 4.0 and 5.0 are not BT 1.0

The still upcoming Z-Wave+ vs Wi-Fi/BTLE vs Thread battle will be decisive for a real mass-adoption of wireless home automation. It will have to be simple for the average consumer, and the central hub made optional for power users, but not mandatory. As for ZigBee, its proprietary implementation depending on each manufacturer and the resulting lack of protocol interoperability killed it from start.

Good knowledge to pick up. Thanks. Same reason I dropped ZigBee from the start and went with Z-wave.

Maybe that is what Apple is betting on since Apple is participating in development of the Bluetooth specifications.

I was thinking that maybe they would make a USB dongle or something? The USB dongle then could contain the HomeKit chip and do the security..

Good information here on this subject.

Especially the discussion on the need of one company putting it all together and act as a kind of "pusher" and coordinator or a technology to make it happen on the market.

But.....

Even when I am also a kind of Apple fan in the mobile environment and like their GUI and integration of things I not want Apple to be the company controlling my house.

In the past Apple already shows how they deal with their power (e.g. AppStore policies - rejecting apps, removing apps etc.), they way they control which kind of data reaches the devices and which not and the way they put data in their cloud system.

When it comes to controlling my home, I NOT want to use any cloud based systems and I want to be as free as possible to decide what I do with my devices. When HomeKit is ready to go, it will be also very closely connected to their Eco-system (would not make sense doing it the other way

It is almost OK for my mobile devices like that (even when I still not appreciate that much - but I get used to it and have arranged myself with it accordingly...) but not for my home.

The reason I choose the more costly solution from Fibaro was mostly because I have the highest degree of control over my house and the data 'it' collects with their system (so far and I strongly hope it stay that way....). I not have to use any cloud approach which is so in favor of the masses right now (until the first cloud provider stops their service and the data is gone or a could based provider comes up with new creative ways of payment....).

I hope that the z-wave gang get their sh.. together and start to act more coordinated to give their technology a real weight in this game.

Z-wave has its downsides but in terms of radio emissions and power usage I think this technology is very good compared to wifi based devices.

Well...... Just my opinion

Just for awareness. Since v4.080, Google Analytics has been embedded and enabled in Home Centers. Search the forum as there have been a few threads on this topic.

Understand your points, hence here I am on Fibaro platform. But...those factors are fast changing and tiling me the other way. In my opinion, Apple is still the lesser evil among Apple and Google. Google is one which goes all out to steal personal information and disrespect personal choices to sustain its stakehold on us.

Posted

Just to make myself a bit more clear ....

I do not believe Fibaro and their policy is the best in every respect (adding analytics and so is also not to my flavor...).

Still they give us more flexibility and possibilities (at least so far ..... Hope that is not going to change in the future ). That of course comes with more responsibilities for us users on the other hand ...

The big ones - especially in their big fight against each other - and (!!) due to their .... weeelll let's say 'biased views on things' (like with what to make money, which is 'good' and 'bad' for the user etc.) they limit possibilities too much.

Truth is that some of those limitations are also for the good of user (like Apple devices are less prone to be hacked, they just work etc).

Of course it is also their right to act like they do because then want to make money - no surprise in that and also nothing to hold against them.

It is just that I experienced in the past that those restrictions and data collections are not always good. And be sires that Apple does collect almost the same amount of data from your devices .... Google just do it more obvious...

Also, this should not be a monologue ranting agains the big companies. They do as they do and it is ok. We all use their products and so we canno blame them.

I just wanted to make clear that for me the house should be a private place and so I would not like to have everything including my home devices in one of two eco-systems which would be controlled by one company.

In addition I would like to be a much as flexible in my decisions as possible. I know that is already now that is more of a dream

Hello everyone,

I want to buy Fibaro home lite is working properly Homebridge also Fibaro home lite
I have now veraedge and I run models models using Siri but recently I saw the system of fibaro and I really want to buy fibaro home lite, but I want to be sure that it really supports Homebridge

Including whether ios version 10 is supported in homekit Would you be able to control the models through Siri?

Another question, is there access to the site? Not on the internal network of the house.

In veraedge have anywhere access and phone.

Is in Fibaro home lite scenario can be done by location? over the phone.

I would be happy for answers,

Thanks

Does Fibaro have an update on this? When can users expect something?

Posted

So I've just downloaded iOS 10 and opened the Home App...no devices found.  Please Fibaro, give us an idea of how and when this will be working?  Your name was on the top line of the list in the Apple launch slides so surely you are prepared for this release?

Posted

Just installed Homebridge with Fibaro plugin on a Rasberry Pi. iPhone and AppleTV work great. Even Dutch language with siri. Now hope Fibaro will integrate theit own version of Homebridge software in the HC2... It is possible and pretty cool.

Hi

Any ideas when we could control our HCs from the native Home app in iOS10? Would HCL be compatible? Will this be done by a software update?

thanks
