Remind me why there are 4 devices associated with a dimmer?

I think I read, or was told, why a dimmer (for example) with id 9, shows as devices 9. 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 but I can't remember.. Can someone remind me?

What is the difference with these? Is the configuration set in only one place? (I mean, if I set some parameter on device 9.2's advanced section, is it setting that parameter on all 9.x devices?)
