Question

Posted (edited)

Dear community

Im really impressed about the Fibaro HCL and Fibaro Z-Wave Devices PowerPlugs etc.

But I dont understand some terminology, some words of the gui, the meaning etc.

So what exactly is Master and Slave an how should i correctly Name them?

I have e.g. 2 Fibaro PowerPlugs which measures energy consumption of dryer and washing mashine.

If i click them i get the power plug Symbol and named the device according to its Location and which

appliance is connected to. When i click to master "section" i can also rename this device but i dont understand

the meaning of this? please have a look at the screenshots ive taken

What are hidden / unassigned devices?

What does "device is disabled" in System (under advanced paramters) mean?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

PS.: Where are the measurements values logs saved? is it possible to back them up?

Master is whole device and slave is part of device.

E.g. you have Fibaro motion sensor. That sensor have 3 slaves: Motion detec., Temp. sensor, Lux sensor, ...

So Motion detec., Temp. sensor, Lux sensor, ... are slave devices and you can work with them in scenes, panels, ...

In section hidden devices, there are stored master devices and slave devices, that are not useable with setting you have set on master device.

"Device is disabled" means, that you will not use this feature of device in your system. E.g. disabling LUX sensor in motion sensor.

Logs are in temporary memory (RAM) and you can access them as root (only fibaro has access). Please, correct me if i'm wrong.

Master is a device that is in charge of others (think Home Centre incase of device, or anny association master whom tells others how to behave - say you associate D/W sensore with lights in this example lights are slaves and D/W is master;

Master of device is more or less communication interface so i would not worry about it too much as those rarely do annything beyond sharing communication. you can allso adress slaves directly because of this system).

do NOT name master unless you plan on doing something with that, name slave after device (say wallplug that dose stuff with washing mashine should be named "washing mashine" for example, unless you plan on changing what plugs in than you might want to adress its location, again unless you plan on moving it about (hint: do not move devices about too much unless its specifically portable such as key fob).

Most devices that measure something store those data on its internall memory, backed by (incase HC2 its memory or incase HCL cloud) on timed basis. suffice to say that those data are not going to evaporate unles you specifically set them to not save. Backing annything up outsside Fibaro network is complicated and not supported process. heck i so support for a while and i can assure you it is not somethign i've ever done.

You can have devices hidden when you do not want them to clutter the User interface, do not need to controll them directly (perhaps items that are part of automate scenes / associations that need little attention from user).

Unassigned room is for devices that have been added but not yet placed into existing room, rooms are helpfull when you are trying to put little order into things and have separate action zones for say kitchen and living room (maybe diffrent needs of lighting, heating etc.)

    Thank you for your help!

I think i understand the Basic structure, so PowerPlug is only one Sensor, but the structure is always Master->Slave.

Temperature Sensor is a Little bit Stange, because ist one device so if i understood right Master = whole Eyball Sensor device.

And Slaves are the different Sensores in this Eyeball housing eg. ligt, Motion, temp.

But you have to assign the room to all sensors, even though the complete device is in one room and sensors cant be placed to different room

you also stated to not rename the "Master" but i already did it, hope it will not have a bad effect on the whole System?

    Kind regards!

Its merely way you read things, system has devicess under device ID, i conssider it slightly less conffusing to leave master in default state but hey if you want to name it diffrently who am i to judge?

Yes you can place each sensore into diffrent room but rooms serve to make order of things more than annything. So that would defy concept behind rooms alltogether. It is much the same concept as you cna devide devicess into its own rooms while they are all on your table not 2 meters away from controller .)

I allways recommand name everything you can simillarly (Motion sensore all Motion + sensed property) and rarely bother naming things that i wont see on display. It helps finding devices during scene creation /associating / etc.
