Configuration of Motion Sensor

Question

Posted

Hello,

i have a Fibaro Motion Sensor set up with my Z-Wave Controler Piper. So i don't have the Home Center.

How can i set the parameters for my Motion Sensor? For example i want to change the sensitivity.

Setting the parameters is a controller issue, I can't help you with that, I've not heard of a controller named "Piper" (yet). :-)

But knowing the parameters is a matter of reading the sensor's manual. You can download all Fibaro manuals from:

Good luck!

Piper (getpiper.com) is an home alarm system. There i don't have access to set parameters of Z-Wave accessories.

I read the user manual of the sensor and there is also the right parameter, but i don't know how to connect with the sensor and change this parameter.

So i have to use a controller. But is a controller always a piece of hardware or can i also just run a program on smartphone or pc?

Hmm... If your Alarm system doesn't know how to handle Z-Wave devices... Then maybe contact the supplier how the system is supposed to communicate with a Z-Wave network? A Z-Wave network needs an "inclusion device". A controller is such an inclusion device. It can "include" = add and "exclude"= remove devices. What happens is that your slave device (the motion sensor, but possibly al other kind of stuff like switches, thermostats, ...) gets an ID from that controller. All devices "included" can talk to each other. If they are not included, they can't communicate. For completeness: they don't *need* the controller after inclusion, but I think Z-wave is rarely used that way nowadays. But (in almost all cases) your controller will also have the capability to send parameters to the device, run code, check battery status, send mail etc. Now, if you only own two Z-wave devices, one being the sensor and the other being the alarm system, and you say you don't find any relevant info on changing parameters... then your alarm system probably (but please check!) does not have the ability to "include" devices, it is not a controller. If you don't find any info on that, it is safe to assume that you do not have an inclusion device (controller) and you cannot make it all work until you own one, and include both devices. Controllers come in many forms, there are solutions that run on a PC with a hardware dongle, a Raspberry Pi (with dongle) and boxes like HC Lite, HC2 (or Vera, to name a competitor). If you plan to expand your Z-Wave network, I suggest you research the software and controller part. If you don't, I would send the sensor back and try a different solution...

Piper is definitly a Z-Wave controller. And i have also included already the Fibaro Motion Sensor. And so fare all works fine. If the sensor detects motion it follows the rules i setup on the controller (Piper). For example i can start the siren, video recording or also just send me a push notification.

Put my problem is that the sensor is supposed for outdoor and right now it is to sensitiv. I have to adjust the sensitivity if not it fires all the time when the wind moves a plant. I want the sensor just fire when a person comes to the door.

    MOTION SENSOR’S SENSITIVITY
The lower the value, the more sensitive the PIR sensor.
    Available settings: 8 - 255
    Default setting: 10
    Parameter size: 1 [byte]

Put right now i see no way to set a new value for this parameter. My controller (Piper) doesn't have an option on the app to do it.

The parameters get stored on the Z-Wave device once they are set? So i could buy a USB-Stick Controller to set the parameter and after change again over to Piper.

That is partially good news. You seem to have a controller and a functioning Z-Wave network. Good.

Z-Wave parameters are stored in non-volatile memory. But... including the device on this "second controller" won't work as you think. To include the device, it first has to be excluded from the first controller (your piper alarm). Doing that, resets the device. After that, you set the parameters, via the cheapest possible controller + software combination. That would be an open source software plus some dongle. For instance:

I can't help you with domoticz, I've tried it once but got stuck in the documentation and a few configuration files, but there are certainly forum members that do use it. :-)

But here's the issue... To go back to the first controller, you have to exclude the sensor. And as I said, that *resets* the device, it forgets the parameters and you get nowhere. Z-Wave mandates this behavior. If a device doesn't reset after exclude/include, then it doesn't follow the rules. Your motion sensor isn't one of them...

There is a theoretical possibility though. Some controllers support a "secondary controller". I think, with my limited experience, that is a minefield because of poor implementation between different vendors. But theoretically, if your alarm supports it, you could add a "secondary controller". That gives both of them access to the device.

Thank you for your help. Things are much clearer now for me. I will try to contact the vendor of Piper, maybe there is some hidden possibility to send parameters to the sensore. But i think not.

Maybe you can "blind" parts of the sensor by taping over a part of its sensor window?
