Recover from power loss

So last night we had a series of power fluctuations/loss, very short, maybe <1s. All devices (router/NAS/HUE/raspberryPi) recovered from the loss but the HC2 did not. It ended up with all lights on and even on power down and restart did not recover it. I had to boot into recovery mode (but could not connect, even though HC2 was on the LAN), then power off again (power button), remove the power for a while and then clean boot it back. This was a lot of hassle and sometimes required multiple "passes" to get it back.

 

My NAS has a "reboot on power loss" which always brings it back up after any power cuts (which have been very infrequent). Is there some option to set to "reboot on power loss" on the HC2? My wife is not happy at the moment, that if that happens when I am away, it will not recover itself and get back working as HUE etc does and she has to do nothing. 

 

If all else fails then I'll have to get a UPS, but I cant guarentee how long any power outage could be so at some point that would run out and she'd be left to restore the HC2 manually anyway.

 

Any ideas?

The fibaro uses 14watt so a ups will do the job for a long time

I guess your problem is more related to the fluctuations, (including the HC2 trying to boot over again before a complete POST/normal start-up or shut down could be completed), than a clean power out and on. I have become so dependent on the automation build into my house, mostly by z-wave/HC-2 control, to chance on purely the grid alone - hence a UPS. The other benefit being, it does not only provide power (for a long but limited time w/o grid), but also provides "clean the power" to the HC-2. So if you find yourself in a position like mine, dependent on the automation build into your smarthouse and at the same time have a wife and kids that are living in the house while you are traveling, well then I have not come up with a better solution than a UPS. (And a failover 3G internett connection).

It might have been the fluctuation that did it, but the Synology NAS has a "restart on power failure" option and that managed to boot just fine after the power was out and came back, and that too is really just a *nix box with some custom software, so you'd think Fibaro could recover from it too (assuming it wasnt in the middle of a write at the time that corrupts some core files). 

 

If the HC2 is clean shut down, and power is removed then restored, will the HC2 power itself up? Guess I could test this at home later. With a UPS it looks like with my Synology NAS I could monitor the UPS and then shutdown the HC2 via scene/API, but not sure how I would get it all back on again once the power has returned. Without spending silly amounts of money, I think I could get a couple of hours out of a UPS which would be fine for these fluctuations we had last night, but wouldn't help on a full power outage when the power eventually returned. I guess at least if it has powered off cleanly, the missus could turn it back on again and it should work rather than having to do that process I mentioned above. 

 

 

Out of interest what UPS are people using? Until the HC2 becomes a lot more integrated into my home, I am not willing to spend hundreds of pounds on a UPS, but something like this seems worthwhile -

I had exact the same symptoms as Marbe described, and I've solved it. I saw on this forum a hint about the CMos battery, so I checked the voltage.

It was 2,8 Volts, and the CR2032 should have 3 Volts, so I assumed that it was "empty". I replaced it with a new one, measured voltage 3,3 Volts.

Bios settings were not affected when I replaced the battery. Now the HC2 boots when I remove the power and plug it in again. I had this issue for months, and now I'm a happy person. I live in an area where we have several power outages for hours and that happens a few times per year, and my UPS will not hold that long. I hope, by sharing this, that many of you can solve this now finally.
