Testing the smoke detector (without burning down the place ;) )

Question

Posted

Dear all,

I just got my first home center installed with several light modules etc. The basic stuff is working, so now it is time for more advanced stuff ;)

I got a couple of smoke detectors that I want to connect to several light modules and an alarm. Is there a way to test my settings? i.e. can I trigger the alarm without burning some paper next to the alarm?

Thanks!

You can buy some test spray for smoke sensors.

I have one at home (don't know why, but I found one) and it worked.

Also opening a bag full of screed and filling a bucket with this stuff will test a smoke sensor very well ;)

Ok, so no hardware or software driven way of doing this?

My wife tested it with burned toast :D But I think that it can be tested by pressing button on it. There must be instructions how to do it on leaflet that came with it or you can check here:

Quick warning about concrete dust, Fiber from insulaing materials, miscelanious stuff - it is very highly recommanded to not use that as such materials tend to stick to random surface and could impair if not destroy the device's ability to detect annything (we've had a brave installer creating big fuss that FGSD are not working, they were installed while there was still whole lot of dust about and that kinda broke them.

You can test the FGSD via: pressing and holding the centrall button: create a simple block scene where triggering tha alarm will say light up wallplug or start light or something, hold the button in middle of the device and if light starts you are golden .) (added advantage to that is that the FGSD could allready be in place when testing so youll get good gauge if signall gets to unit).

Some people recommand cigarete smoke (i do not, keep your cancerous fumes to yourselve) but conssidering disclamer you can juse boil some watter and swing still hot pot under the sensor? that seems like something everyone can do. It dose not care what particles cross its sensors as long as there is some fom of steam it should detect it. quick warning tho, do not swing the pot too close to the sensor .)

I tested mine by getting an e-cig from B&M bargains one of them shisha ones (nicotine free). Just a puff and blow it the way of the detector and it soon went off! hope this helps.

Smoke in a can is by far the prefered method to test these.

Maybe that is needlessly expenssive, you should be able to just use matches to trigger its detection (one match possibly).

I accidentally tested it by having an overheated pan with oil in it to the extend of turning into a smoky kitchen. Hahahaha...
