run scene: automatic/manual/disabled?

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi!

Could someone please explain: how does the parameter "run scene" work?

-) if I set the scene to run "automatic" does it always run in the background and doesn't need to be triggered?

-) if I set the scene to run "manual" does it get triggered by the --[[ %% properties --]] parameter?

-) does it make sense to have an "automatic" scene but without any triggers?

-) does a time based scene always have to be "automatic" because the time/date doesn't trigger a scene?

-) does it make a difference if it's a block scene or a LUA scene?

I understand that a disabled scene never run until I run it with the play-button.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @MJFox,

You don't really need to complicate that much about scene setting. The best setting is to leave it on Automatic if it is auto-started after HC reboot but this setting is also ok for scenes that are triggered by some device or global variable or even started manually. I have scene that is started automatically after reboot and is running all the time in the loop, also have scenes that are triggered by devices and/or global variables and they are all set to Automatic, even my scenes that I have to start manually are set to Automatic.

So I have around 81 scenes and they are all set to Automatic. Manual setting is used for scenes that are run only by pressing RUN button or called by another scene or virtual device. I never tested if they can be triggered by device or global variable but to be honest I don't care.

Disabled scenes are not supposed to run no matter how they are activated and they are usually hidden in the system by default. If you can run them then that is probably software bug.

From FW 4.110 scenes have switch in web GUI that can be used to disable/enable them. If it is turned On then scene will start running if it is set to autostart after reboot and will stop if turned Off. Other scenes will not trigger if this switch is turned Off and it will not be possible to start them manually.

So in my opinion, this switch is all we need to control scenes behavior and that Run scene option can be always set to Automatic. It is really an overkill that just confuse users unnecessarily.

I agree with @Sankotronic it seems to be overly complicated. I did some testing and couldn't see any difference between automatic and manual.

If I want a scene to run its set to automatic, if not I click off/switch to disabled.

The automatic scene can be activated by the trigger button, and the manual scene will not be executed, such as you use the switch module to set a button as the scene to start the button, the button can make the scene execution, and manually not only in the background or app execution scene , Do not know if you are helpful
