"An Automation Will" in the case of the unexpected....

Question

Posted

Hi...

This may be an unexpected inquiry and I'll preface it by saying I haven't been struck down with anything untoward or gone all morbid

Has anybody put together what I am calling "An Automation Will" and perhaps it is known another name.

It struck me as I was documenting my system how would anybody else make sense of it all should I be hit by a bus unexpectedly. I have it all online and what about if they couldn't find the password. The last thing I would want is having all what I created ripped out because it cant be maintained. (call it a bit of ego stroking) My kids are too young at this stage but perhaps none of them may have the tech interest that I have...

... so I have decided to create a document of how all what I created stitches together. Even the simple stuff such as how all the AV is interconnected or how to get access to the alarm and what powers what as I have some POE and some local traffo's for the tablets....

This is probably less about the scenes and the vd's initially but they will need to be part of the explanation.

Has anybody a nice template or am I starting from scratch ?

Thanks

-f

This is a good idea.

Sad enough I can't give you any documentary but I feel the same urge for this.

If I'm not able to service my system and my girlfriend has to take over there will be be a huge problem.

So a 'easy to follow guide' including passwords for all would be a great option.

I happend to have a discussion with my girlfriend  the last day's about this;

What if I get into a Hospital and wouldn't be able to manage the HC-2's; could she manage the whole systems???

    @TRicky

    Same thought process here

    I'll start as soon as I get my system back running and will share the structure

    Goodmorning guys,

    I thought about this a lot. My main problem is is that my wife is very a-technical, she loves how it all works together but can't be bothered to invest time..

    So I am thinking to just leave the wiring diagrams so a college of mine can take out all the automation. (I am an onsite project manager electrician).

    Well it seems that I'm the lucky one :-) My wife is not really technician but she just knows how to repair system if something is wrong when I'm not at home. She knows how to login as superuser, how to reset things. Luckily in this little bit more than one year owning HC2, she had to intervene only few times and it was always success :-)

    Besides, if my automation just dies completely, everything in our house can still be used as before HA installation. There will be no more Angelina waking us up and sending notifications and reminders, raising/lowering blinds or turning on lights, but my family will not stay in dark or without heating or anything that we had before I installed this box!

    P.S.

    They will only have to take out original remotes from drawer and insert batteries for TV, set-top box and some other multimedia devices :-)

    @Sankotronic, I'm pretty much the same, I don't have anything running that I can do myself without the HC2. It was funny last night when I had that issue with the HC2 as I had to set the alarm at the alarm panel for the first time in months, I had to unset and turn on the music this morning and the kids were asking "where is domino" this morning so she was missed. For my the HC2 is an auotmation and convenience layer on top of my usual system and I can't see that changing at all....

    Yes @AutoFrank, so, where is Domino? Are you still having problems with restoring it?

    @Sankotronic

    Domino is back with us  :D .. I'm just documenting the steps in case they may be of help to somebody else

    Only causality is my custom icons and the switch parameter on my 4 kitchen fibaro dimmers seem to have been adjusted form 2 way retractive to toggle (which is a bit random), I still don't fully understand what happened

    @Sankotronic, yep, I also fixed the dimmer issue. It was a funny one,  parameter 14 seemed to be set as a toggle but was set for 2 way so I had to set to default and back to 2 way and it works now

    After recovery, please go to each device's "Advanced" page and click on "Read configuration", then, after a few seconds, refresh the page. Start with mains powered devices. What happened, during recovery, is this: some devices have been reconfigured (and parameters get default values). Then, the database was restored. Now, the contents of the database and the parameters stored on the device are no longer in sync. If you still have one device that doesn't act as expected, please try it. After "Read configuration" you'll see that the (refreshed) parameters page explains/matches its behaviour ;-)

    Hope this helps!
