I'm looking to put some HA devices in my garden to control lights, pond fountain etc and was wondering what do people use to test the network coverage. Is it a case of plug it in and see if it works or does anyone have technique ?

Hi @andyp,

to be honest I didn't measure z-wave signal before I installed double relay for my fountain in the garden. Relay is installed in the fountain concrete base in plastic box to make it water resistant and is about 20 meters away from HC2 with big glass doors in between. I included double relay near HC2 and then move it to fountain. At first it didn't work every time when I pressed button on mobile app, but this lasted for short time, probably until it found it's neighbours and get it's place in the network. Now it is working like a charm.

If I'm not mistaken, many Fibaro devices has possibility to check network connectivity and can tell you by color of the LED if have direct connection to the gateway or are using neighbours to communicate and if it is possible. You can find more about that at

Next double switch I plan to install for gateway that is behind house and distance to HC2 is more than 30 meters plus concrete walls in between. I already know that there is no possibility to get direct communication to the HC2. But I do have some main powered devices installed in garage and I hope that they will relay signal to HC2. How I will do that. Well fist I will include double relay to HC2 and then will install it at the gateway. Then leave it there for some time and then test connectivity. I don't know any better way to do that.
