503 Errors and HC2 case hot

Question

Posted

Hi all,

I have a Home Centre 2 running version 4.130. I have about 25 z-wave devices and running about 14 scenes. I've been having some internet issues (dropping in/out) so I have change to a different ISP. I thought this was the cause of the recent 503 errors.

I have been on the new ISP for 5 days with no issues (from the internet) and I'm still getting 503 errors. Every time I have to reboot the HC2 to reconnect.

Am I running too many devices? Do I have to many scenes running at the same time?

The scenes I'm running are all the Main scene and VSL from Sankotronic for each room.

I don't recall the Home Centre 2 being too hot to touch when I first installed it in January, but since I have setup all the scenes it has been very hot. When looking at the CPU usage it does seem to peak at 80-90% on both cores every few mins, sometimes reaching 100%.

Does anyone have any advice? or had the same 503 errors/overheating issues?

Thanks for reading.

Hi @Crofty,

I'm sorry that you have 503 problem with your HC2. I have almost 100 z-wave devices included in my system and running handful of scenes and VD's but don't have that problem. My HC2 is also on 4.130.

My HC2 same as my iMac are 'hot' on touch, but that is normal for them cause they have aluminum casing that helps to dissipate heat form their electronic components.

I'm unable to pinpoint what is causing 503 error "Server unavailable". I had it occasionally on previous version but after replacing router by my internet provider due to some problems with internet connection it never happened again except after rebooting. After rebooting I always first get 503 page which after some time is replaced with home page of my HC2.

Do you have any devices reported as dead? Do you have turned on pooling dead devices in z-wave network configuration? When this 503 happens what is with blue LED's on the front of HC2?

I have encountered this problem sometimes when I reboot my hc2 running on version 4.054 and the only things that  I have to do is remove the lan cable on modem and connect direct on my PC a few minutes put it back on the modem. Do you have turned on pooling dead devices in z-wave network configuration? about this what is the purpose for turning on the pooling dead devices?.

Hi @Infinity,

after rebooting HC2 I never need to disconnect network cable. If I was connected with Safari browser during reboot then first it shows 503 page and then when all services are started browser refresh itself and show HC home page. All I have to do is wait and give HC enough time to start all services.

Pooling dead devices tells HC to periodically check if it can establish communication with mains powered dead devices and unmark them as dead. This and also if global pooling is turned on for all such devices can sometimes make z-wave network busy but I'm not sure if that can cause 503.

Do you have any VD's or scenes that communicate to outside world using http or tcp protocols? Like maybe Netatmo weather station or Weather State VD? Can you try to disable them and then see if there will be any improvement with 503?

I found on youtube one video where Fibaro recommends doing recovery procedure in case of 503 error, but I never did recovery of my HC2 and 503 that was occasionally showing up still stopped after replacing router and making good and stable internet connection.

I hope that other members will also join this conversation with better explanation or maybe even solution.

no. i dont have any vd or scene that communicate to outside world.  and even when I open it in google after few minutes of using  then 503 error will come sometimes.

    Hi @Sankotronic,

I am thinking it could be some device which I have hidden? I have quite a few unassigned when I added a few devices a couple of months ago i had some issues with the 4-in1 fibaro motion sensors (they didn't connect to the z-wave as previous ones).

I have enclosed a screen shot of unassigned devices which I have just found the page and i didn't realize I had so many. Is this normal?

Where do I find the dead devices?

I'm not polling dead devices should I be?

Would it be worth configuring the z-wave network again? Is that not done periodically?

When I had the 503 error I only had the 2 led's on the right hand side on. I've been missing the 3rd one. Until this morning when I checked it now back on?

I have friends coming over today so i can't look into further, but I'm going to monitor it and check later this week when I have a day to go through the system.

    Thanks for getting in touch.

    Hi @Crofty,

It is normal to have some hidden devices. Usually master and some slave devices are hidden by default after inclusion. Just leave them as they are. Now we are clear that z-wave, scenes and VD's are most probably not cause of your problem.

This is what can be cause of your 503 problem. It is obvious that you have network problem so HC is loosing network connection since 3rd LED is not turned on. Here are some more questions that can lead us to the solution:

    • Did you set static IP address on your HC2?
    • If answer to above question is Yes, then did you check that used IP address is not included in DHCP server on your router?
    • Did you try to replace network cable for HC2?

    • I have not set static IP

    • What is the benefit of a static IP address? Is it something I should do?
    • Did you try to replace network cable for HC2?
    • I did disconnect and reconnect the network cable not replaced when I moved it across the room to connect to my computer.

    @Sankotronic

I now have all 3 LED's on the front of the HC2, and I have not had any connection issues as yet.

Thank you for the information and problem solving you are a great guy!

    Hi @Crofty,

I'm happy that problem is solved.

Setting static IP address on HC and every other devices that HC will interact over the network will ensure faster communication and more reliable connections. But to get it right all IP addresses that are used in static settings must not be part of the IP address range that DHCP server can assign to devices connected to the same network. If you need more information about this please ask.
