HC2 failower/slave

Question

Posted

Have a lot of problems with my HC2. It get very warm, gives med 503 and really instable. Spent all day yesterday trying to restore it from backups and i finally git it working but when I woke up this morning the problems are back :( My house setup is really reliant on the HC2 and we get a lot of trouble when its not working problely, for example I can not close the blinds in the kids bedrooms..

So now I have ordered a second HC2 which I'm planing to use as a failover/backup. Does anyone have any experience with his? My goal is to have a second unit thats always up to date so that i can use this if (when) the primary stops working. Alternatively i could use the backup stick to setup the second unit but I have understood that the stick only works whit the inut it is shipped with.

All information about this is really appreciated!

Hi @sir_horn,

There must be some hidden problem either with some scene or VD code or you have device(s) in your network that causes troubles. I have HC2 with 102 included z-wave devices (503 devices in total), 100 scenes and it is working reliably. If you have greater number of block scenes with timers then you should maybe consider to check and reduce their number. Other problems can came from Main loops of virtual devices but that is difficult to pinpoint and it is just matter of trying.

More serious problem can be caused by z-wave devices which are not set properly so can cause network congestion with too much traffic. That one is also difficult to find due to lack of diagnostic tools, but in that case Fibaro support can be very helpful since they can login to your system and see all logs and find out what is happening.

Also you can check this regarding 503:

I had similar problem with 503 page in the past and I did many things like removed few devices added before 503 start happening and also I rewrite many of my scenes and VD's. After that I never get 503 again. I don't know what really solved problem since I did many changes but it helped at the end.

Regarding HC2 getting warm, that is normal. HC2 body is made of aluminum metal that conducts heat very good so it gets definitely hotter than devices with plastic casing. I believe that Fibaro made good choice to make metal casing because it helps electronics inside to dissipate produced heat which eliminates need for cooling fan and prolongs electronic parts lifespan.

For the last question to have second HC2 as backup, I don't think that is possible and according to some people even not recommended. You can transfer backup from old HC2 to new one but that is unofficial procedure. More about this procedure you can find on French forum or maybe even here in some of the threads don't know which exactly.

Thanks a lot Sankotronic! Fibaro have checked my system without finding anything wrong except that i have many Sonos VD (about 20) which could take memory. Unfortunately the problem with 503 still occurs every other day. it works great for a few days and then 503.. It seems like the RAM is loaded, constantly about 60%. I will qontinue to check diagnostics, turn on/off scenes etc to narrow down the problem.
