Internet Speed Connection with HC2

Question

Posted

Hi,

I will like to have control of my Internet speed connection. (Ping/Download/upload speed)

There is any way to connect with the router as a virtual device to get that information along the time?

There is any device that measure that data?

I suggest to fibaro to have that under Energy panel or event panel.

Any idea on how to do that will be great.

Thanks

I think he actually is ;)

you will (possibly) need something like this:

a good start would be to check whether your router supports SNMP

Hi 3JL, I have read your articles and I appreciate them very much. What I think is that , is a professional orientation and not particular case (B2C). Any suggestions you have is appreciated.

Hi Marjomar, I have never done this, so I can only guide you in some direction (all shared below is retrieved using basic Googling). In all cases, this is pretty advanced I think, hence be prepared for a steep learning curve ;)

There are two aspects to your question: retrieving information and modifying router function. A first step would be to identify possible modes of access, here are some:

    • IFTTT could be a first step:

, but that has limited functionality. Do these suffice? If so, linking those to the Fibaro system is quite easy:

    • SNMP is the industry standard; does your router support SNMP from the box? Some googling brought me

      and

Please login or register to see this link.

. Surprisingly - and this is where things get weird - according to the Dutch site, SNMP is supported, while according to the international one it isn't... It is not mentioned in the manual either, so I assume it is not.
    • Installing another firmware could be an option to enable SNMP, but this is super advanced and can fry your router. See this example:

Please login or register to see this link.

    • Apparently ASUSWRT does support some type of remote access via the command line. See this example:

. Would that fit your needs? I don't think Fibaro can do these kind of command line actions; you would likely need something in between, e.g. a Raspberry Pi or something similar.

    Hopefully this helps you!

    Hi,

You need to control it or to monitor it?

Hi, I will like to monitor the different parameters (ping/download/upload speed) so can have the history like we have in the energy tab for Watt and temperatures.

Really, I think you should not try to do this in Fibaros products. Set up a Raspberry pi and use snmpwalk (if your router supports SNMP) to get the transfer speeds.

I found this article that may perhaps help you:

I suggest that you then install influxdb + Graphana on your pi and get data into that, and graph it there. There is definitely a learning curve here for you, but the end result will likely be much more what you expect/want than if you try to get it into your HC2. If you need the information in your HC2, I am sure that you can construct a Virtual device that gets the data you want from influxdb. However, how you can handle that data in HC2 will never be anything like what you see in for instance the Temperature/ Power consumption displays. Fibaros Home centers are very nice consumer products, but not the most tinker friendly, and I think they should not be thought of as such.
