Fibaro dimmer for 70 Watt Fan

Most experts will say "no", you should not try to control the speed of an electric motor using a leading/trailing edge dimmer. That being said, I have tried just that, and it seemingly works fine as long as you are careful not to "dim" the motor to a very low speed. I limited it to 50 - 100 %. The risk is that the motor overheats, particularly if the reduced power is not sufficient to drive the motor. It will draw current standing still, making a burn-out likely. I tried to fiddle with the parameter used to specify start-up current for halogen lamps, expecting this to give the fan enough boost at the start to get it going. But I do not feel confident that this does the trick.

The proper way to control fan speed is to use variable frequencies, but Fibaro does not provide any such units. But if you are not too afraid to kill the fan motor, it could be worth a try to use the Fibaro dimmer for limited speed control of a low wattage fan.
