Stuck at "Starting Services", HC2 4.170

Question

Posted

Hello Community,

Recently, I updated my HC2 from 4.160 to 4.170.

Today, HC2 stopped responding to zwave sensors, I was able to login to web interface and see that.
CPU and Memory were all fine, even I think CPU was a little bit calm than usual.

As usual in such a case of "block", I went to Configuration and clicked Restart.
Unfortunately, my HC2 never come back operational.
Tried restarting it several times, every time same, stuck at "Starting Services".

I see HC2 is responding to ping.
Also I observe continuous z-wave led flashing first 4-5 minutes after restart.
Than only the three right led stay on.

After 4.16->4.17 update, I had added few Fibaro Door/Window 2, configuring other old devices, also.
Also upgraded a few Heat Controllers to 4.3 firmware (was pain).

I am not sure if it was before or after the update, but I also added around 10 Fibaro Roller Shutter 2.
The setup was working fine for around a week since now.

I have around 50 physical devices, mostly Fibaro ones. A few VDs and Scenes (being there since 4.14)

Does anyone has any suggestions apart from reset and restore procedures?

Can it be ZWave Services (or soem other system ones) refuse to start due to some reason and the UI also waiting upon them, staying at "Starting Services"?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello Chapa ,

I have the same problem as you ..

Do you have answers to your questions at the end ?

Or  how do you solve your problem.

I hesitate to make a "recovery" .

I have saved the configuration 1 month ago but I am not sure about the recovery mode  and if my backup is finally well stored as soon as the system does not start.

Could you help me or somebody from the forum .

Thank you

    Hi @pietsaba,

Glad to hear someone is interested, bad to hear around the forum I am not the only one.

Wanted to keep the story and anger for myself but asked, will share it.

Like you, I did not want to make a backup recovery, but wanted my system to be fixed.

That is why I contacted Fibaro support, providing them access to HC2, and CLEARLY saying that I want system fixed (and not recovered, as I can recover it by myself), and explanation why it happened in order to prevent future problems if it is something avoidable.

After three days of silence and three emails from me, I finally got a "professional" support, saying there was "database problem" and my HC2 was remotely fixed by restoring a latest backup, which I clearly wanted to avoid.

At least I should be asked whenever and when I want such a operation, if it is the only way to be fixed, which I doubt is. I understand this is easiest way to go, but it is not a general solution to a major client's problem.

Glad Fibaro do not support banks, as restoring a month old backup will rock the client. But it is just me, common client with common problem, and procedure is so straight  ... do a backup restore.

Probably there is a full-time "remote restore support" position in-place. They should be even very busy, as I waited three days for a response.

If someone from my company support staff act in such a manner, will leave his place immediately.

But ... it is Fibaro after all ...

Will be good to hear some manager opinion about these cases and what internally Fibaro do to prevent/resolve them.

Hope after above statement, Fibaro will take your case more seriously and:

    1. actually fix your system as is

    2. provide information why this happens to such a number of people

    3. provide tech information of the problem, so tech guys around may try to help or avoid such corruptions

    Good luck

    Hi @chapa ,

First of all, I'm sorry for taking so long to respond.

I would also like to apologize on behalf of our Support Team for leaving you without an answer to your last question.

About that recovery, you specifically asked for the fastest solution as you mentioned your whole system being down etc.

Any other way might have been more time consuming, so our expert decided to act as fast as possible in order to get your system back on its feet again.

    @pietsaba

Regarding your case, it might be best if you contacted our support and discuss the best course of action.

    @A.Smolinski , @T.Konopka and others,

During last two and a half years I had bunch of problems with HC2 like devices deleted or non configured after reboot. I always manage to solve those problems by restoring last backup.

Since I upgraded to 4.170 I start experiencing z-wave network delays (from few seconds to several minutes) even nothing was changed on the system except installing FW 4.170. Also HC2 get frozen several times, but last time was unfortunate since last reboot finished with dreaded "Starting services" that never started.

Fibaro, finally your developer team managed to force me to do recovery! :(

After recovery I had to upgrade to 4.180 which is same problematic FW as previos 4.170. Not only that all my icons are messed up since restoring backup restores icon index file or something but not icons so as a result I have 300 listed icons with broken link since they are deleted during recovery. Of course I can not get rid of those broken link icons. Also same problem with z-wave delays remains. System can work for half a day and then it start to have z-wave delays that makes it UNUSABLE.

Rebooting by even disconnecting HC2 from power does not help! Only what helps is restoring last backup (sometimes even making backup but not always).

Instead of developing UHAS I have lost last several days trying to make my HC2 working again and since noting helps I gradually loosing will and patience.

I was thinking to redo my complete system by resetting and including 100 physical z-wave devices and then importing miles of code all over again, but I'm almost convinced 100% that after all that big job done I will again end up with sick system because of your developer and testing team obvious incompetence. Do you even have team for testing FW before releasing it?

It is really shame, having such good idea and products for HA and then so poor implementation. I had really big hopes and wishes for it but now only tears and sorrow is left.

This evening my HC2 (4.180) did not react anymore . All my shutters remained open. ==> It is nice to know that you CAN'T count on your home automation system when you are not at home. Reboot helped, but the system should run 100% for years without a reboot. It's not Windows hé ...!

:D Too much to expect from Fibaro in the development situation they are currently. Once a freeze happened, you can expect it more and more regularly. At least this is my case.

I am a step closer to buy a Vera Secure, put HC2 after a Wall Plug and use Vera to remotely restart Fibaro when down and me away from home :D

Yeah, it is almost a month waiting support to answer. But, hey, no need to hurry...Let the support guys know, I managed it already.

Sorry for pasting part of my email, but I think your experts got me wrong and people reading your post may get also confused:

"I clearly do not want to go hard way restoring the system and do all the inclusions and setups again.

Please, do something as soon as possible, as currently all automation is broken, heating also, have three kids.
Don't make me regret spending thousands of eur for HC2 and all the Fibaro modules (more than 50 so far)"

It is me, didn't making a backup of the system, after massive Fibaro Shutter's inclusions, tons of UHAS icons and customization.

    So, blame on me.

And it gets more disappointing, when you realize that Fibaro App's icons cache still has the icons in cache, indexed according last HC state. But after restore and setting up again, icon ids changed.

In my case I did Clear App Cache, and spend one more hour trying to reorder my rooms, icons, settings.

Today I had a power failure. The HC2 came on again and I could access it. But it's the second time that the Main Scene from @Sankotronic didn't close my shutters or activated my HUE. When trying to debug the VD, I got forbidden access 403. Nevertheless I could reboot the system. Now everything works again.

Even a power failure can disturb your Home Automation system after the power failure. Incredible !!

Maybe difficult if the power flicks off briefly and then back on again.

It was a power off of at least 5 minutes ...

@Sjekke  You would think that a full reboot process on power on would fix it.

Indeed ... but it isn't. After the reboot, you need to reboot again before everything is 100% operational. A real assurance when you are not at home :/:/

Had the main scene crashed? Do you use watchdog?

    Had same issue with 4.170

Please try again to disconnect power, wait for few minutes and only than go to recovery mode.

    Worked for me...

Questions - what was your last action? I mean did you try to create backup? If you've tried to restart the box, could you tell why?

I'm trying to understand when the box is stuck.... in my case I had CPU overloaded and I tried to create backup and then it stuck on "starting services".
