[Question] Power Outage Alarm

Question

Posted

Hello,

I tried to build a scene that will detect dead z-wave plugs and trigger an alarm/notification.

I like to get notification when a group of plugs/lights went dead and another notification when all devices restored their power back reporting also the time period.

Also I see that it takes a lot of time fro scene to understand that plug is offline.

Problem is that is did not work correct. Does anyone can help or have anything similar?

No, the main switch where the power line is coming in your main distributor (for switching off all power inside your house).

Yes. power switch = power relay ? right?

Okay, I will try to explain.

There are hardware devices which could detect 3 phase power outage/failure. These devices are available with time delay contacts.

Also if you have a main relay (which is not a switch) then you could de-energize the relais when power outage occur. After some  delayed time you could energize it again.

Ok got it! Nope! I have 1 phase. I think these devices are called power supervisors and I do not have any form of them

This is an example of a three phase variant. The only proper way to solve power outage flapping is through using this kind of devices. Trying to do this with any kind of Home Automation solution will probably will not do any good, IMHO.

Ask a local electrician to solve this kind of solutions, because it's not a thing you should do yourself if it is not your profession!!!!

BTW, it's called in English: Electric Phase Monitoring Relay. You also need a main Relay for actually switch off the main power.

Simple way of power outage detection is to use central power monitoring with tool like Aeon  clamp power meter. It requires to have modem and HC2 on UPS power backup. If there is power outage, Aeon clamp meter "will report" all the time the same value. In real life, consumption is moving all the time, at least in decimal places. In case the exactly same value is being reported for more than 3 readings, its very high probability of power outage, and HC2 should trigger the notification about it. I do have this way of reporting in place for more than a 2 years and so far it works. I had only ľ false alarms, but more successful ones :-)

Hola, I have a HomeCenter 2 in my vacation rental in Spain.
Since there is often a power outage, I regularly have a fridge with spoiled goods.
Now I have connected the refrigerator to a Neo Coolcam Power Plug and I can see on my app if the voltage is still on.
What I would like me to get notified when the power fails, so I can call a keyholder to check my fridge.
Since I don't understand anything about LUA, I hope someone has already come up with something like that.
A normal scene does not work because when the power is lost the Power Plug cannot do anything anymore.
I thought of a program something like: "when Power Plug voltage <then x Watt I get a signal".
Who can help me, I am a beginner sorry?

    Thanks in advance.

@Juanflor you cant catch the current state of dead devices.

you can catch this state (maybe) after some period... 1h / 2h... when device makes "some issues" for HC2, HC2 mark this device as dead.

but after (just at this time) power fails you can't.

you can use an 230V relay in combination of an smart implant to simulate a power outage. The only thing is that your HCL or HC2 needs to be on UPS power

Thanks a lot for your answers.
A UPS is not a problem for me, but "a 230V relay in combination of an smart implant to simulate a power outage" is to difficult for me.

    Hi @FSE ,

I used UBS with relay, but it can be also done with door/window sensor and relay and made my own power outage sensor.

    Here is electrical schema:

For RELAY I used one like on this picture, coil must be for 240V:

And fuse holder like this for glass fuse 0,5A just to prevent relay coil to start burn if get damaged:

I soldered them on universal PCB like this:

Instead of UBS that requires power supply connected to UPS you can use door/window sensor and connect wires from relay contacts to IN on the sensor.

You need to use NO (normally open contacts) on relay which are closed when relay is energized. When there is power loss, relay will de-energize and open contacts to door/window sensor (like door is opened) and that's it.

The rest is in scene code where you can monitor status of the UBS or door/window sensor and if after some time there is no more power outages then turn devices back On.

This device works almost instantly so should provide you with a good starting point for what you need to achieve.

230v GSM plugs, like those from yoyo Power, sends a SMS when the Power goes down. You will need a gsm sim card though, prepaid ones are the cheapest option.
