Organizing and Naming device masters/slaves

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi,

I know that this topic has been discussed many times before I wanted to share a few simple guidelines I have settled on for my setup.

I created these so it would be intuitive when using the Web UI / Phone & Tablet Apps but also useful when using the HC2Toolkit or some future solutions on the new device routing/neighbor in 4.510

Warning - This may not suit you but may help generate some useful discussion that may help inform the best approach for your setup.

Here are my guidelines

  • Device Master Name [room 2 char abbreviation + device purpose]
  • Device slaves are hidden if they server no useful purpose to end users
  • Visible Device Slave Names [end user friendly name]
  • Hidden Device Slave Names [function]
  • Master and Slave devices (visible and hidden) for a given physical device are placed in same room
  • Master and Slaves are ordered/grouped together in the room with Master at the start
  • Actors are normally at the start in a room, sensors after that (depending on what is being monitored in UI/Apps)
  • No slaves are disabled but have "Save logs to Event Panel" unchecked

I have a 2 character abbreviation for all my rooms (Kitchen - KT, Garden - GN, Garage - GR, Utility - UT,  Laurens Ensuite - LE, Laurens Bedroom - LB, Hallway - HL, etc)

I have included 3 rooms from my setup to show the result (show visible view and show all view)

  • Kitchen - lots of devices and many hidden
  • Living Room - Example of a fibaro relay split between two functions
  • Playroom - Example of a dual relay with only one side used

Would you be kind enough to shed some light on why you do not disable unused slaves?

My logic was that it it still part of the network as the Master is configured.

I have it set the device to "not to poll" and do not send to event logs so communication from it is close to zero

I didn't see any further benefit in disabling it but there is probably no harm in doing so

Thanks, you are probably right. I just applied the logic that if not used, then that was probably the rationale for the check box/option to disable.
