Outdoor camera

LeRooy

Question

Hello guys.

I am about to get some cameras (PoE) to my Fibaro HC2.

Which cameras should I go for? I want the camera to have some type of cloud storage when "thing happens" in the camera eye. I also want to add the camera to the fibaro software. Is this doable?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have 5 PoE Hikvision camera's and added to my HC2. My Synology NAS takes care of the recording for playback when 'things happens'^_^

The models I use:

1x DS-2DE4A220IW-DE

4x DS-2CD2385FWD-I

Synology DS218 with 4TB Western Digital Purple

The only thing I can't get to work is the snapshot function in my Home Center. I would like to receive a snapshot when someone pressed the doorbell button, but apparently this doesn't work with my type of camera's.

That is also an option. When using cloud storage you need to be sure the upload speed from your ISP is high enough and reliable. I don't want a monthly payment for storage so that's why I use a NAS, and can also store things like documents, pictures, video etc on it. I think you need to choose for a brand  that provides there own cloud storage, then you known for sure that that is working. About adding to the HC there are several support but I have no experience with those other brands.

  • True :-)

I hope someone uses the setup like I wish.

But hikvision has their own cloudstorage or not?

Hikvision doesn’t offer any cloud storage, they only sell a NVR for recording.

The NVR is only compatible with camera’s of the same brand, Hikvison.

With a Synology NAS you are not tied to one brand.

And if you want to use it as security camera, don’t look if it is compatible with the HC but choose a good camera with good specifications. That is more important than HC compatibility

Does anyone know a type of camera which offers cloud storage?

I have installed a Foscam FI9900EP at a friends parents house. They love it, but they are not so geeky as me so they are satisfied quickly:-P. But the image was good enough to see who is at the front door and the parking space. Only thing I hate are camera’s with a ring of red LEDs for infrared night vision. These red LEDs attracts spiders and little flies, so you them constantly in the image.

I know Foscam offers cloud storage, but  at this installation I installed a 128GB sd card for recording so they don’t have that monthly payment. See screenshots below for pricing and what model are supported.

  • Ok thanks!

But @kevin if I go for another type of camera which has local storage for example SD card.. Do I have to remove the SD card to save a video, and do I have access to view the clips, and does the clips automatically delete when SD is full?

It depends on the manufacturer/app. In the Foscam app you can access the sd card en view all in videos. When the sd card is full the oldest files will be deleted.

I can’t tell you how apps from other manufactures works

Here is a slightly broader question, related to outdoor cameras:

I have recently installed a Foscam camera (F19928P), which gives me pictures on both mobile and pc apps, is integrated with my WLAN, has motion detection and local microSD card storage, and sends push messages and e-mail when the motion detection is triggered. I now wonder what I would gain from integrating this with my Fibaro HC2? Automatically trigger some scene when the alarm goes off? Turn the lights on to discourage intruders? Transferring pictures to the Fibaro user interface (why would that be an advantage)? In short, why should I bother to integrate the two systems?

I have some security cameras with video recording on a NVR. I leave the security on that combination, where it is specialized in.

Some examples: But because the cameras are already there, I also can send pictures by mail if motion is detected (by a z-wave motion sensor). I also made my doorbell a bit more clever, if someone pushes it, I also get some pictures by mail (because the power usage of the z-wave wall plug and doorbell increases). Some simple functions, with low investment, that make live easy.

If I suspect a security breach (other than alarm), I look at the video recordings.

Thanks, @SmartHomeEddy . Your example of linking the camera to the doorbell makes sense, and at least shows me one possible integration. On security, I think we agree that this is best left as a stand-alone system. Even push warnings when motion is detected and remote replay of the recorded or live video are available through the Foscam iPhone app. No Fibaro integration needed.

For the time being I think I leave the two systems separate (I have no doorbell :-) ). Maybe someone else has found other clever ways of integrating cameras and other smart house functions?   If so, may I suggest I new thread: Examples of useful camera integration.

    @knuthuse your imagination,
    - send picture to mail (as SmartHomeEddy mentioned) after someone pushed the doorbell.
    - send videostream to your tv if someone pushed the doorbell (no HC necessary). But offcourse, you only want to do that if motion was detected very recently (HC required).
    - send videostream to your computer browser when someone pushed the doorbell (when working on your computer).
    - Change sensitivity of your camera's according to the weather.
    - Activate you camera for special occassions (for example you're at home but want to activate the motion of the camera's) via manual scene or a button
    - For older or cheaper camera's which do not record the videostream, when a normal motion detector was breached, send picture to mail or to NAS on RPI
    - activate the recording of video to NAS when your alarm is armed (or increase sensitivity or quality).

Yes, useful ideas all of them. Most of them, though, are linked to having a doorbell, which is not the case at my summer house. In my case (unusual, maybe) is that the camera is used exclusively when no one is in the house: a) as an intrusion alarm based on motion detection, and b) as a remote monitoring tool when I want to see that everything is OK (say after a snow storm). In that perspective, the one idea on your list that is relevant is to link the activation of the camera to arming of Fibaro alarm functions. That may be worth considering.

And I will continue to use my imagination. Thanks for your stimulus!

Jill, in English your post reads: «I would also like to get some Fibaro cameras, and I don`t know which one to choose». Why do you, being based in the US, post it in Norwegian?
